Principals use their judgment to provide an adequate amount of time for ELLs. They should consult the teacher when making this decision. ELLs are allows time extensions for all tests.

Separate Location

In order to create the best environment possible for ELLs, schools can provide optimal testing classrooms/facilities. They may take the assessment individually or in small groups.

Bilingual Dictionaries and/or Glossaries

ELLs may obtain glossaries or dictionaries with direct translations. Glossaries or dictionaries with explanations are not allowed. They may not obtain the bilingual dictionaries and/or glossaries for foreign language assessments.

Simultaneous Use of English and Alternative Language Editions

This accommodation is not allowed for the English Language Arts State Test. For other tests, they can have the English version of the test along with the home language version of the test. Students should only write their responses on one of the tests.

Oral Translation For Low Incidence Languages

This accommodation is not allowed for the English Language Arts State Test. For all other languages for which there is no written translation, students may receive oral translation of the test. No clarification or explanation should be given, only direct translations.

Writing Responses in the Home Language

This accommodation is not allowed for the English Language Arts. For other examinations, students can write their responses to open ended questions in their home language. If schools allow this, they are responsible for scoring these answers.
