The Cuban Missile crisis was a big part in the competition because the USSR put a bunch of missiles into Cuba. Because of this, it caused tension between the US and USSR. These were a newer invention at the time, so they weren't the best, but they were missiles that didn't need to be manually flown to the destination
Reason 3: Hydrogen bomb. The bomb was a mix of chemicals, that when ignited, caused a burst of energy during the nuclear fusion of isotopes and hydrogen.
