When Jonas receives his instructions it tells him that he can lie. Which pretty much means that he doesn’t have to tell the truth about what he learns when he is with the receiver. This shows that the author is showing us that Jonas will learn things that he isn’t supposed to tell people. The author also uses foreshadowing that something serious will happen later on. I can connect this to the real world because many people lie in our world. In conclusion this quote shows that from now on Jonas’s life will be separate from everybody elses.

When the book quoted "You may lie", It really impacted how Jonas, and the reader, felt about the new assignment. It really means that lying is ok as the receiver. It happens in the middle of chapter 9 and the instructions says it. This kind of gives you the thought that as the receiver it could kind of be like the real world. There aren't any literary devices used. The purpose is to say you may lie, because you aren't aloud to even talk about your training

This passage had a significant impact on my thinking because it change the whole point of having to follow the rules.

Jonas is really stunned, scared, and confused because in his set of rules it says “You may lie.” This makes him uneasy because a main rule of his community is to not be rude, and lying falls under the being rude category. But this is also kind of a scary thought because his rules say that Jonas can break the community’s rules. So this then makes the mood turn into nervousness also. This quote is also connected to the real world because if you lie in real life it can go either way. If you're sparing someone’s feelings then people aren’t mad, but if you lie in a negative way you are frowned upon. So there community is different because if you lie in any way you are frowned upon.

The quote is introduced after Jonas is selected to become the new receiver, comes home after the ceremonies, and reads the rules. When reading the rules what happened is the rules say “You may lie.” Jonas immediately reacts surprised because he has never been able to lie and learns that his life will change.

In other words in his rulebook it states that since he is becoming the new receiver he has the power to lie. He is very suprised with this rule because of how his life will change.

The the mood changes in this scene because Jonas starts to worry/become surprised at how he has so much more power he has. What the author is trying to make us see is that the new responsibility and power he has will change his life towards himself and not his friends.

This quote is important because it shows a turning point in Jonas’ life and shows that he will be affected by the job he has been selected as. Real world applications can be drawn from the meaning of this quote can be when something is better to not tell someone because it may upset them a lot. This passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how lying can be something so harmless we think but can really affect a person's life.

To Jonas he seemed to think of it as you are now allowed to disobey the rules you’ve lived by ever since you were a baby. Also, there are no literary devices being used but if this quote hadn’t been written down, Jonas’s life would have changed a lot. Finally, this quote is important because without it Jonas might not feel so empowered to really be the new giver in training.

"You may lie"
When Jonas get’s selected the job the Giver. He is given a set of rules or instructions. The very last rule is rule #8 which is “you may lie.” This quote is really important because Jonas is not supposed to lie, never in his 12 years of living. But now he is told to lie. This has a huge impact on Jonas therefore it has big impact on the story. This makes the story very serious and in a way intense. It is very serious because no one else the whole entire community is allowed to lie and now Jonas is able to do it just about whenever he feels the need. He can do things like, lie about dreams and taking pills, lie about his work and school etc. It is intense because he somehow gets caught it could be bad because he might get carried away. That is why the quote “you may lie” is so important.

In other words Jonas is now allowed to lie to help him not give away too much information about being the receiver. The author is trying to show us how Jonas is really questioning how often he should do it and shows how serious the book is if they are allowing him to lie. A real world application is someone experiences some major change.

This quote means that in a way he is free. He has more freedom and he can break the rules or be rude now. The mood is scary and intense because he wonders if everybody is lying to him especially his parents. The conflict could start with fights because now in the morning Jonas doesn't have to tell his parents about his dreams anymore if he doesn’t want to. I think he is a good character because he says he will wait to start on that one but just want to think about it. But he gets worse because he does start lying. So even though he now can lie, it doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. This is a big event in Jonas’s eyes. He gets handed the rule book that no one else does and it permits him to lie to his community. Jonas replies with he’s not ready, but will be. He needs time to take it inn on the events that just occurred.
In other words, he can break the rules without getting in trouble. No one else has that privilege without getting released. This quote is important because it comes with great responsibility which some people would overuse the power of the rulebook where this quote is found. Real world applications could be when you get older you get more privileges. That is what Jonas got. This impacts my thinking on the use of power and to take responsibility seriously. Not everybody gets power like that.

This happened while The Giver is giving Jonas a list of things that he is allowed to do. This quote means that Jonas doesn’t have to be honest. Also, the author is using foreshadowing because he could lie in the future. In this quote the author is being surprising. If the rules say you can’t lie then why would you now be able to. This quote says that you could have a non-perfect thing in a “perfect” community. It makes me wonder if Jonas’ community is a legit utopia.

On his new rules it says “You may lie.” In other words he may now trick people daily to help him with his new job of being the receiver. This is a very important part of the book and really changes the mood of this book. Now as Jonas has never been able to lie before he can and is wondering and questioning how much he should. This quote is also showing foreshadowing and let’s us know this will have a great impact later in the book. Here with the quote “You may lie.” The author is trying to get us to think why would the new receiver would be able to lie or have to lie. This quote really changes the way you think about what is happening in the story. This can be applied to the real world in many ways. One way is thinking, should you be telling the truth in some situations or is it for the better to lie. This quote has a great impact on me daily wondering when and if people are lying to me.

The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is a good character because he is so startled by the concept of lying. But it also shows us that the community is so controlling that they don’t let people lie even about little things. This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how this quote is important because it shows us that Jonas is allowed to do something that the rest of the community cannot do unless it is in their rule folder. Also from the real world I can make a connection because most people are shocked when other people lie to them, and Jonas is shocked that he is allowed to lie to other people.

Jonas is reading 1 page of instructions for being the Receiver he is given when he reads the quote "you may lie". This must be scary and very weird to Jonas at first, because he'd been trained throughout all his life never to lie. It may be helpful in keeping his training a secret, but it will still be a hard thing to get used to. The quote also reveals that maybe this perfect society isn't so perfect after all.

The quote ¨you may lie¨ means that Jonas can lie. This was said when the giver was telling the rules to Jonas. This quote shouldn't exist because lying is wrong! If you lie you sin and they're saying that he can lie. The giver said this to Jonas as a rule to being the receiver. The author is basically telling us that Jonas and the community live under a lie. This rule is horrible and shouldn't exist.

The quote “you may lie” startled Jonas when he read his rules book. The quote makes me wonder if people really lie a lot in the giver. Jonas has this same feeling when he reads it. He realizes that people he talks to could be lying to him. He wonders if his parents lie to him too. He realizes his friends most likely got that rule too-his parents too. He also realizes that the world we live in isn't always a kind place where everyone is always happy and joyful.

When Jonas opened his folder to find a single sheet of paper, he was uneasy about seeing the rule “You may lie.” In other words, Jonas can lie to anyone about anything and at any time. The mood seems to be more dark, he realised, maybe his parents lied to him a lot. This is foreshadowing, maybe the Giver could be lying about how important the job is. The author is trying to say is that Jonas was probably have been lied to so many times. This quote is important because it shows how every person with an assignment are lying to each other. This could be drawn to the real world that interrogation could be a lot more obvious because people would easily know that someone is lying. They have the right to lie. This story changes of my thoughts, maybe seeing a release could be really disturbing.

"You may lie". I think Jonas is astonished at first when he sees this quote. To the readers its interesting though because they tell the children never to lie. I think it is also appalling because what if Jonas parents have been lying to him this whole time. Finally this quote could cause a lot of doubt in the community about who is lying at what times.

The quote "You may lie" shocked Jonas, as he was trained and taught his whole life to never lie. The thought of breaking a rule to him was a major offense, so he was scared and nervous to lie.

He also started thinking a little more, and wondered if these words were in his parents instructions for their careers. He started wondering if maybe since he had them in his instructions, his trainer the Giver had them too. Then maybe he thought that the giver could have lied to him to. This was very stressful. He decided to not lie as it made him feel uneasy, at least until he needed to.

The author is trying to make us see that the community had instructed people to never lie, as this causes many problems we even see today in the real world. This sentence had a big impact on the story because it made readers realize how strict the community was.

This quote would rarely be used in the real world. think that because you would never tell someone "You may lie". You might tell them "Lie", perhaps to get them out of trouble or something like that, but unless it's a white lie, no one would say that.

The quote "You may lie" kind of confuses and shocks Jonas at first. He was raised in a "perfect" community and never told to lie, so when these instructions came upon him, he didn't know what to think. He decided he would not take advantage of this rule but use it only when necessary.
After a little bit of thinking, Jonas wonders if everyone, including his parents, had been given the same directions when they got their jobs. That created a paradox: he had permission to ask if they lied, but he may never know if that is actually the truth. He also goes through a small crisis of conscience where he thinks The Giver has lied to him too.
I could not think of a good connection to the real world because of how different our world is than this community. Everyone has the permission to lie, however rude, so it does not nearly shock me as much as it affected Jonas.

Even just the thought of breaking a rule is nerve racking. So he was very nervous of telling a lie because he would break a rule. In other words he was just very nervous. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is feeling weary about lying to other people. This passage has a significant impact on my thinking about rule breaking and that you can break the rules sometimes.
