Weekly Focus Question-Why Connected Learning?

Connected learning can provide a vocabulary for teachers to reclaim agency over how to best meet the individual needs of students in their classroom. Another reason why connected learning is powerful is because the best practices for one classroom are not going to be the best practices for another classroom. Connected learning allows teachers to find the "best practices" for THEIR classroom. Connected learning is student centered and interest driven, which are great components to promote academic achievement, career opportunities and civic engagement. Everyone is naturally more motivated to learn and pursue passions, which is another reason why connected learning is effective

Connection to Learning Experiences

As a student, when I was assigned project that interested me, I always felt more engaged. I also felt like I learned more when I cared about what I was learning about. For example, in fourth grade we were told that we were going to be making our own books, and that they could be about whatever we wanted. I was obsessed with cats, so I chose to make a book about cats. I wanted my book to be perfect so badly, I made an index for my cat book, which we were not required to do. I was just so excited about our learning task that I was motivated to do beyond what was asked of us, and in the process, I learned how to create an index for a book in fourth grade

As our reading stated, part of connected learning is adopting to changes within the context of a classroom. I've experienced this in clinicals, when working with students who are hungry, tired, having a bad day, or disengaged. In the moment, I've adapted lesson plans to meet the needs of students so learning objectives can still be met. For example, when one of my students was refusing to write a response, I let her explain her thinking orally to me, and she was still able to meet the learning objectives for that week.

What would connections to career possibilities and civic engagement look like in the elementary setting, particularly in the primary grades

One way this week's reading challenged me was, rather than list concrete examples of connected learning, it described connected learning in abstract terms and listed a conceptual framework for what connected learning is. I struggle with applying abstract ideas into practice, so this reading really challenged me to think of specific ways that I would create a classroom that utilized connected learning.
