Up at 6.30. Left at 9.15. Heard some radio publicity about us. Arrived in Gulargambone about 11.30. Very small. Told that only certain aborigines allowed in pub, and aborigines not served in the cafe (the only one). Got permission to go on the reserve (for 1 hour only), Everyone very pleased with the interviews. The people better off than at Wellington, but not much. Reserve closer in, seemed healthier. Spoke to Mr and Mrs Baxter - very old and very interesting. Apparently town jobs for aborigines impossible to get, shearing jobs pay well but are uncertain and seasonal. Welfare board and police very much disliked. Housing very poor.

"When we got to Tallahassee at lunch time, large crowds of Negroes and whites were awaiting our arrival. The white crowds looked ugly, the Negroes, as always, friendly. "We came down to see history made," one of the Iauer said to a member of our group. A Negro minister and I were forcibly ejected from the "White Men's Room" by two of Tallahasee's less amiable citizens, but when we reported this to the police they ejected the ejectors. I We were served together at the lunch counter, although the atmosphere was a far cry from Jacksonville. The white waitresses would not serve us. Negro help were brought in from the kitchen to take our orders. (Did any group of waiters, J wonder, ever receive beucr tips than those Negroes got from us?) have never seen such expressions of hate as were on the faces of the white waitresses in that terminal, as they stood there observing us with contempt and disgust. That I felt less than overflowing love toward them in return is only a dreary indication that sin is common to us all."
