Here are details of Open Doors in March 2026, including an information session on Thursday 25 September 2025 at 3:30pm-4:30pm.

Open Doors will return from 23-28 March 2026.  The event takes visitors behind the scenes to showcase the fantastic range of careers available in construction and over 200 locations are expected to take part across the UK.  The construction projects participating will range from houses to skyscrapers, with manufacturing facilities, offices and training centres also opening their doors to demonstrate the off-site roles across the sector

Build UK, which organises Open Doors, wishes to raise awareness of the opportunity for educational institutions to register their interest in attending Open Doors group visits, with sites due to begin to appear on the Open Doors website from Monday 6 October 2025.  On the call we will share details on how Open Doors works differently for those working within education – this information is crucial to making the visits work within the academic calendar. 

Also due for discussion are plans for Open Doors 2026, key dates for your diaries, changes from the 2025 event and special arrangements and provisions in place for educational pre-bookings, as well as taking questions from attendees.  Open Doors visits assist you in reaching the Gatsby Benchmarks for your careers programme.

Attendance is particularly recommended for those who did not access the equivalent online session last year (25 September 2024).

This is a very personal event to me and the Young Professionals brand. It’s where Young Professionals was founded right here in Derby and the first event that we ever ran was at this very same venue we are now coming back to after 5 years.

Retail Degree Apprenticeship

Our Retail Management Degree Apprenticeship Scheme is a fast-track development programme designed to give you all the tools that you need to begin your career in Retail and progress to becoming a member of the management team in one of our stores.

Over the 3 years, you will learn and experience every aspect of working in a store as a valued member of the team and to understand how to provide the best for our customers. You will work towards becoming a Store Coach (Manager) by the end of the programme. Alongside this, you will be enrolled at a university to study the Chartered Manager Degree Apprenticeship on a part-time basis whilst also working in a Dunelm store.

All successful graduates are awarded a BA (Hons) Business Management Professional degree from Henley Business School, as well as a Level 6 degree apprenticeship.

Buying and Merchandising Apprenticeship

Our Buying and merchandising scheme is designed to give you all the tools that you need to begin your careers within the commercial department.

The 2-year programme will make sure you’re challenged, supported, and will give you plenty of room to grow. You will be buddied up with a capable Junior Merchandiser & Buyer, who were once in your shoes, so feel confident that you will learn from the best!

Over the 2 years, you will learn and experience every aspect of working as a Buying Assistant and will be part of the Buying team that is responsible for planning and selecting the products we sell, both in-store and online. You will work closely with our suppliers to provide compelling, competitive offers to our customers. As an apprentice, you will work towards becoming a Junior Buyer by the end of the programme. Alongside this, you will be enrolled on to a Level 4 Buying and Merchandising apprenticeship – equivalent to a higher BTEC qualification.

Over the 2 years, you will learn and experience every aspect of working as a Merchandising Assistant. In this role, you will work alongside your Buying Team to ensure our stores have products in the right place at the right time. You’ll learn how to analyse sales data, manage stock levels and collaborate with suppliers to support the department’s success. This is the perfect opportunity for someone who has an eye for numbers, an analytical approach and using data information to help make future business decisions for our future product range.

Insight & Analytics Apprenticeship

Our Data Scientist Degree Apprenticeship Scheme is a development programme designed to give you all the tools that you need to begin your career in Insight & Analytics and learn the foundations of what makes a good Insight Analytics professional. Sports on Offer

Currently football, boxing, netball, rugby, climbing and personal training - students choose one sport to play as their primary sport alongside their education. They receive approx. 8-10hrs per week of training, and in some sports, match play, and are coached by elite, former professionals in their sport.

Based at the YMCA Newark & Sherwood Community & Activity Village in Newark, Notts. This is a new £17.5 million pound sports and activities venue, where we base our education, and the majority of our sports.

Over the following three years, you’ll broaden and deepen your knowledge through a range of attachments within our Civil Aerospace business, all the while working towards completing your apprenticeship standard and gaining relevant engineering qualifications.

This is hands-on work. Throughout your apprenticeship you can expect to train on state-of-the-art products, equipment and machinery. All while being guided and supported by engineering experts.

You’ll be working on live projects and earn as you learn through formal training as well as practical experience.

What could you become?

In Derby, you’ll develop specialist skills in one of the following roles:

Fitter: Assemble aircraft systems using a range of tools, data, and drawings, ensuring individual components and assemblies meet exacting specifications.

Machinist: Precision work, making components from specialist materials using hand and CNC machine tools, as well as measuring and checking they’re exactly right for our requirements.

Mechatronics Maintenance Technician: Install, test, fix, and maintain complex automated equipment with skills and knowledge learned across mechanical, electrical/electronics, fluid power and control systems disciplines.

Who we’re looking for:

You’ll need a minimum of 4 GCSEs (or equivalent) at grade 4/C which must include Maths, English Language, Science (excluding Biology) and one other subject at grade 4/C. Obtained or predicted.

Beyond your qualifications, we want to see evidence that you're genuinely interested in the practical side of engineering or hands on activities. For example, we'd like to hear if you enjoy figuring out how things work; fixings things, or about an engineering or practical project you've done at school or home or a club you've been involved with. We'll provide you with a fantastic framework and all the opportunities you need to progress, but it'll be up to you to lead on your development. So, you must be full of initiative, adaptable, eager to learn and driven to succeed.

As an Engineer Apprentice, you'll have the opportunity to develop practical skills with one of the region's largest employers whilst continuing with your education. We're offering a 5 year apprenticeship programme within our state of the art automated warehousing and distribution facilities at Boots. Here you will experience how our team of engineers focus on the highest level of site services and maintenance 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. As an apprentice engineer you will gain the skills required to maintain an automated operation to world class standards of equipment performance and reliability. This will be delivered through planned preventative maintenance, continuous improvement, reactive fault finding and root cause analysis. What you will be doing on your placement?

We're excited to partner with Toyota Manufacturing to deliver your initial training. During the first two years of your apprenticeship, you'll follow a hybrid model that combines time a Toyota's bespoke Apprentice Development Centre, located at their manufacturing site in Burnaston, near Derby, with dedicated work placements.

At the Apprentice Development Centre, you'll be supported by world-class trainers as you develop skills in mechatronics, welding, machining, hand tool use and much more. Your work placements, based at our Nottingham Distribution Centre, will allow you to apply this knowledge in real-world settings alongside our expert teams.

The remaining time on your programme you will be in the development phase mainly based at Boots working alongside our experienced team putting into practice the skills and knowledge already developed as you continue your journey to become a fully qualified engineer. This phase will also incorporate day release to allow the completion of a HNC level 4 qualification.

Training and Assessment Period

Please ensure you understand the following requirements before you apply:

We recruit candidates based on aptitude and potential and will provide full training to give you the skills and experience needed to succeed.

Successful candidates will need to undertake a training period of approximately 12 months. This will include online and on-the-job learning, a three-month course including 3-weeks residential and a 1-day Public and Personal Safety Training course with annual refresher training. The Public and Personal Safety Training includes physical activity and requires an appropriate level of fitness. You must be able to take part in, for example, jogging, stretching and movement exercises, self-defence and restraint techniques.

Throughout the 12 months, you will have a Practical Training Officer to guide you through the process and will receive support from your management team and colleagues.

Successful completion of all training is vital for the role. We provide candidates with as much support as possible but those who do not complete - and pass - all required training, cannot remain in the role and may need to be moved to an alternative role within HMRC. If that is not possible, your employment may be terminated.

Other specialist training may also be required, dependent on the team you are placed in and the changing nature of surveillance work.

Job description

The Compliance and Targeting team (CaT) is responsible for considering insolvent and dissolved companies for investigation under the Company Directors Disqualification Act, live companies for investigation under the Companies Act and referrals of allegations of criminal offences for investigation.

CaT also performs compliance work and when that fails it will refer cases for possible criminal investigation or direct prosecution.

The role of the Examiner in CaT is to review initial information and complaints that are received against companies. They will then carry out further inquiries to determine if the matter should be allocated to an investigation team. Information may come from multiple sources such as reports on director conduct from Insolvency Practitioners and Official Receivers, Insolvency Service colleagues, complaints and referrals from members of the public and other agencies and regulators.

Your analytical skills, coupled with strong verbal and written communication abilities, will be instrumental in conducting reviews of reports and referrals and making robust and effective targeting decisions.
