I was just informed today by my brother that the master is planning to sell me. He’s looking for a man to do the tough work instead of a girl. I now know that it’s my time to finally escape. I decided not to scare anyone, so I left without telling anyone. One of the white neighbors told me about the underground railroad, which was a system that blacks used to try to escape. I was just 29 when decided. I packed my quilt and some other survival things in a bag, and went out into the night. I hitched a wagon ride and was so happy, I decided to give him my quilt. Now that I’m free, I know that I need to risk my life to help my family, as well as other black slaves escape to freedom.
