Florence Nightingale founded nursing around 1872-1873 as she led a team of 38 nurses. She had great leadership as she corrected them and allowed them to sanitize and bathe patients. During the Crimean, an abundence of nurses were sent to take care of the crowded and unsanitary living situations. (Winkelstein, 2009)
Nursing is one of the health professions that is the largest and most diverse. It is very flexible and there are many options to choose from within each specialty. The demand will always be high for nursing jobs. (Buhler-Wilkerson & D'Antonio, 2019)

Nursing roles & settings

There are many settings a nurse can work in as well as roles. The options are unique and they each have limitations to them. Some of the settings include schools, clinics, community health centers, out-patient care facilities, and nursing homes. Some of the typical places to find a nurse would be the hospital or physician's offices. (Nursing Careers and Work Settings, 2020)

As a nurse working within a school, their abilities could differ from a nursing working in a hospital. Some of the duties as a school nurse include evualtion of care, developing plans for students, overseeing hearing, vision, and body mass index. If anything is out of their control, they would know to get advanced care and send the child/staff member to the hospital.

Different from a school nurse, an out-patient nurse's role can be more complicated. Out-patient nurses can check vital signs, monitor blood pressure, temperature and pulse, and draw blood. Typically, patients do not stay, so nursing prepare to send the patient home with the correct amount of treatment. (Philpott, n.d.)

Occupational outlooks

The occupational outlook of nursing determines the growth of the job within the next ten years. It shows that if it is a positive high percentage, then there will be a good chance of openings within the future. A high number most likely represents a shortage of jobs. Within nursing from 2018-2028, the percentage is projected to be at 12%. This is a great number and reflects on how the world will always need nurses. Employment is much faster in nursing than the average of all professions and occupations. (Registered Nurses : Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2020)
