North Korea has destroyed most of its trees near the Military Demarcation Line in an effort to more easily spot defectors going to the South. The South has kept most of its wildlife and tress for multiple reasons. They wanted to turn the demilitarized zone from a sign of separation, a scar of war, to a place where people come to paste notes on the fences to the family that was separated from them.
