Growing up music was big for my grandparents! My grandma sang in the choir at church and she also had my mom sing when she was younger. My mom continued the tradition and had me and my siblings also participate in choir. In elementary school we had our school choir and we would sing in church and for a few competitions during the year. My church also did a yearly Christmas Program called "Boar's Head". I participated in this tradition every year from 5th grade till now. In high school I was able to join a guitar class and I also learned how to play the ukulele.

Music has many benefits and should be advocated for in all schools. Music helps in language based instruction and with speaking and reading skills. Students are able to build there knowledge of reading by reading the pictures and words in a song. Students also build their verbal skills by pronouncing certain words in songs. Sight reading music also builds a students critical reading skills. Music is also important because it builds communication and participation in a non-core subject. Music can be an outlet for students and should be included so students have a variety of ways to express themselves in school.
