Purdue University's Department of Sociology had a study that compared two places where resistance did take place (The Warsaw Ghetto and the Sobibor death camp) and two places where resistance didn’t take place (The Lodz Ghetto and the Belzec death camp). Their comparison of these cases has shown that Mass resistance only occurred when and where the Jews properly assessed the threats facing them.

At its height, the total population of the Warsaw ghetto exceeded 400,000 people. Miserable conditions in the ghetto, deliberately exacerbated by German policies, worsened over time. In 1941, one year before mass deportations, over 43,000 people died, more than 10 percent of the entire ghetto population.

In September 1942, as many as 70,000 Jews remained in the ghetto. In January 1943, German SS and police units deported roughly 6,500 Jewish residents of the Warsaw ghetto to Treblinka. During this three-day operation, 1,171 Jewish ghetto residents were shot and killed.

At the start the ghetto was mostly free and didn’t have many rules. About halfway into the war the ghetto completely changed, people weren’t allowed to visit anymore.

After the liquidation some Jews hid in the ruins and sometimes would attack oncoming patrols. Some 20,000 Jews hid in this so-called Aryan side of Warsaw.
