Greyhound Racing, Stop The Abuse

Dogs are sweet and innocent creatures, why would anyone want to hurt them?

Greyhound racing is just one of many sports that leeches off animals' ability to run, in snow, sleet, rain, thunder, and shine. When a greyhound becomes unable to run or stops being competitive, they get euthanized for “Behavioral issues”. Greyhound racing causes serious harm to dogs, physically and mentally. Many of these racing dogs are only used on the track and are rarely retired if they get injured . Greyhound racing is like car racing, except if there's a crash, you risk the life of an animal who never got a fair chance at a good home.

Beat Bobby Flay - Is It Well-Done?

If you’re going to watch an episode of Beat Bobby Flay, be prepared for flaming pans, ingredients you’ve never heard of, delightfully awkward puns, and most of all, be prepared to get hungry. It’s the ultimate cooking show. Its hypercompetitive, humorous spirit melds interesting recipes, celebrity hosts, up and coming cooks, and the Michelin level chef the world loves to hate. Bobby Flay is brash, arrogant, and terrible at puns. He constantly fills his dishes with chili peppers regardless of their cuisine. Everyone on the show mocks him, and that’s the point. Because if you watch this show and root for Bobby, you’re doing it wrong.

For each episode, two celebrity hosts team up to pick two chefs to battle each other, then decide who wins and gets to face Bobby. Some hosts, like Alex Guarneschelli, come on at least every season. Others only participate once. In the first round, he picks a special ingredient that the two chefs must use as the star of their dish. Once the hosts have made their choice from the first round, the winner surprises Bobby with their signature dish. Then, they both cook their versions, and three food experts do a blind taste test to keep things fair. They make the final decision on whether someone has beaten Bobby. Their comments will keep you on the edge of your seat, waiting to see how the final votes come in. Will the underdog triumph? Or will Bobby Flay steal the win again?

It’s fascinating to see what kind of recipes each chef will come up with in the first round, because two takes on making one ingredient the star can be so different. And seeing Bobby’s version of a unique signature dish is extremely entertaining. Regardless, every dish seems truly delicious, and well crafted. Watching the show is like a delicious stew of some competitive fire, some laughter, the perfect sick-day nostalgia, and of course, plenty of chili peppers.

Wingspan, a Testament to an Ethical Approach to Board Games

Wingspan, winner of the 2019 Game of the Year Award, has sold nearly 2 million copies worldwide, according to Elizabeth Hargrave in an interview with Orion Magazine. In the same interview she said “She wanted to create a game that matched her interests, particularly in bird-watching.” And that it did. With beautiful illustrations of each bird by Natalia Rojas & Ana Maria Martinez Jaramillo, these cards not only accurately represent the bird’s appearance, they often show the bird either in its habitat or doing something that it normally would do; for example, the Acorn Woodpecker is seen on the side of a tree, caching acorns for later in the season, which it often does in real life.

The captions are sometimes funny, always witty, with my favorite caption being the Bearded Reedling’s; “These birds have up to four broods per year, and sometimes breed the same year they were born.” While a little gross, this caption led me down a rabbit hole of looking at photos of Bearded Reedlings, and oh my god, they have BEARDS. Seriously, you should look up a photo of this adorable Eurasian bird.

Wingspan is a semi-competitive board game in which you pay either invertebrates (grubs), seed(wheat), fruit (cherry), fish, or rats to play birds. They both occupy and eat the most realistic habitats and food, respectively. Players can also take the “lay eggs” action to help play birds later on in the game, and the joy of deciding which bird to have “babies” is a delightful and euphoric experience. Almost like playing match-maker with a bunch of adorable birds that all look up to you as their caretaker…

Anyhow, the climate forward, St. Louis, Missouri based Stonemaier Games has created over twenty beautifully illustrated games, each designed with care and a dedication to their fanbase, which I can’t say for most businesses. All in all, a five star review for this game that changed the way I look at the world of birds, and ultimately, the Bearded Reedling.

P.S: Here’s a link to the Bearded Reedling’s eBird page: https://ebird.org/species/bearee1

Ordinary Angels more like Unique Angels

Ordinary Angels… Great movie, very very sad but in a good way.It gave me happy tears . It is a good movie in my opinion because it is based on a true story . It really gets into detail with how the little girl could not make it into the hospital in time..And how the family is snowed in the house on a stormy night! I saw this movie in February of 2024. And I thought I would have hated it, but surprisingly I loved it.I thought I would have hated it because it had looked like the most boring movie of all time! Also the dad, one of the main characters is sad because his wife has died, and at the start of the movie the family is at the funeral for the wife

(or the kids' mom). And then this hungover woman walks in the funeral and talks to the little girl that is sick. The woman wants to help the family and babysit the kids. The setting of the movie is like being dropped in a western movie . Kinda like small town stuff. This movie will make anyone cry even your dad that you have never seen cry! This movie is so unique but basic but they made it interesting.

Ocean's Is Stealing The Spotlight

My eyes wide open, I was about to fall out of my chair. Suddenly, a quick move happened on the screen, and I was on the ground. “I did not see that coming!” I said to myself, laughing a little. A film about heists, crime, excitement, and adventure thats what I was watching. If you want to see a movie like this, then Ocean’s 11 is perfect for you! This movie was directed by Steven Soderbergh, who has made many films, but this, by far, is his best. At first, I was very skeptical about this movie, but it stole my attention immediately with Danny Ocean leaving jail. And it kept going up from there. Brad Pitt, Gorge Clooney, Matt Damen, Andy Garcia, Julia Roberts, and Don Cheadle are some amazing cast members who starred in this film.

I personally love crime shows, or mystery movies. And this was one of the best I’ve seen. Well I watch movies, I try to figure out the plot. But this movie was hard to crack! I tried to guess, but the twists and turns it took tricked me. In the end, my excitement exploded like a firework when I knew I had been duped.

I later looked at other reviews on the movie, and I was happy that others had a similar experience with me. “Action,” “Surprise”, and “Comedy” were some words to describe it. Most reviews say they thought this movie is over the moon. Ocean’s 11 also shows how the system is broken in most high resort places.

I also read an article about how some casinos ended up adding more to their security because of this movie. They had not thought of some security risks that Ocean’s 11 showed and thought of. Oceans 11 is fun to watch, and some lessons can be learned from it. This movie will not disappoint.

So tonight, sit down with a bowl of popcorn, take that remote, and turn on Ocean’s 11. Then just wait and watch, because it will all become clear, as clear as gold. Cause this one is a real money maker.

Procreate: the Art Program that Almost Hit the Nail on its Head

As a Procreate user for six years, I have many opinions about this art program. The first time I used Procreate, I was extremely impressed that there were no ads or banners. It lets you focus on the artwork. The user experience is very simplistic but it still offers all you could need in an art program it's like if Minamlisum and a mindboggling art program had a baby I do recommend it for people who are starting to get into digital art. But one of the few annoyances about Procreate is that it only works with iPads there is a version for iPhones but the functionality is decreased because of a new layout of the control. They are at the same places but the layout is different which can be a learning curb Do not fear if you have an older iPad Procreate is very efficient and doesn't use much RAM, so it is great for older iPads and newer ones the only way I've made procreate lag it by making a canvas the size of a house which is very impressive in my opinion. People say that it's outrageously priced for an art program but those thirteen dollars are worth every penny to me. One of the more unique fetchers about Procreate is that you can paint on 3d surfaces I find that helpful with seeing what the object would look like before I paint it. I highly recommend to beginners and professionals

XO, Kitty-The Most Cringy Creation of 2023

By: Sloane Christian

Kitty, the little sister of Lara Jean from, ‘To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before’ goes through love triangles, fake relationships, tough love, and even figuring out she’s bi. This Korean-Drama show is so bad but so good.

There are so many mood swings, and cringy music, but it all ties so well together. Some parts are so sad I could cry, others are so funny I laugh so hard my ribs hurt, and some are so stupid I could rewrite the script.

Anna Cathcart stars as Katherine Song-Covey, (Friends call her Kitty) the very confident, smart, and love crazy lunatic. She has a long distance boyfriend named Dae that lives in Seoul, Korea. He attends a school called KISS (Korean Independent School of Seoul) . Song is usually a boys name in Korea, so the school made a mistake and put Kitty in the boys dorms with Quincy, Min Ho, and Dae. She switches rooms but her roommate sucks, so she switches back.

Out of all that traveling for Kitty, Dae has a girlfriend named Yuri. Yuri is rich, famous, and gorgeous but she’s actually a lesbian and has a fake relationship with Dae for her family’s sake. So Kitty breaks up with Dae but they end up friends.

Reading some reviews on Reddit made it seem like a majority of people liked this show. But some people were mad about these Americans sprinkling some Korean people into the cast like sunflower seeds even though it’s a Korean-Drama show. Jenny Han, creator, and writer of XO, Kitty, and Netflix has officially confirmed that two seasons weren’t enough and a third season is coming out as soon as early 2026.

In this show Kitty states: “I’m ready to stop missing everybody.” and I’m ready to stop waiting for the third season.

There is a divot in the pavers in the courtyard at Sussex that needs to be fixed. It is located right smack in the middle of the school. When there are tours in the spring the first thing they see is this muddy unfortunate offensive heap of a hazard. All winter the excavation collects water and snow which turns to ice and then takes forever to melt. It has become a slipping hazard. I almost slipped and cracked my head open, so did the line of people behind me. I will complain to the board if I have to but we need some way to fix it. Put some heating tiles or rocks something to stop the ice from forming. It also makes the courtyard look like the sunken city of Atlantis just smaller. It makes our stunning school look like an unsightly shame to the schooling system.

In my opinion, homework is awful … sometimes, here's why: would you do Figure 1 or Figure 2? If you are like me you would choose Figure 1.

Every day at 6:30 a.m., I feel a surge of panic as my brain attempts to become accustomed to neglecting REM sleep so that I can graduate. And every day, the purple encircling my eyes deepens as I, a thirteen-year-old, struggle to keep my subconscious from engulfing me in a dark calmness that is slumber. Why am I avoiding the thing that makes me feel so alive, the thing that rids my mind of the bad memories from the day? School hours.

Waking up before the first crack of dawn every morning to walk to the bus stop in the pitch black and immediately work my brain while my hormones are still figuring out what it means to be alive. That’s what school does to a kid. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, the average US school starts at 8:00 in the morning. But the busses get to school at 7:45. It takes most school busses about thirty minutes to get there, and the average time that it takes a middle schooler to get ready for school is 30-45 minutes. So the average time that most middle schoolers have to wake up is 6:30 to 6:45 A.M.

The healthy time for a teen to wake up is at 8:00. (National Institutes of Health) That means that most of us are forced to lose two hours of sleep, completely clearing the important REM cycle, which is vital as it cleans out the unhealthy proteins from your brain and allows you to feel refreshed and able to think clearly that day. But losing this REM sleep five days a week every week, 9 months a year builds up and can lead to both mental and physical problems, including:

Difficulty concentrating

Excessive daytime sleepiness

Forgetfulness or poor memory

Increased irritability and anxiety

Trouble coping with emotions

Feeling groggy in the morning

Now, do you wonder why we’re always annoying and annoyed? I give these hours a D- at best in response to my grades as a teen who can't focus due to sleep deprivation. To wrap it up, I think whoever created the idea for these school hours was uneducated, overconfident in themselves, and… a nincompoop.

Mathcounts: Torture, but worth it

For some reason, the subject math is very unpopular with middle school kids. Students have to critically think the most in this subject, and middle schoolers question when they're ever going to use any math topics in life, so a lot of middle schoolers would find that having to do an extra four hours of math every week for six months would be living hell. But here at Sussex school, it’s different. You will gain more than knowledge, you will gain so many great memories with the teachers and your friends.

Sussex School has been a participant in mathcounts for over Thirty years. Benta Wilson who is the founder of Sussex has been teaching at mathcounts since the beginning. Even though she is intimidating with her math knowledge, she has always been kind to myself and others. Lisa Klempay is not afraid to embarrass 8th graders, and if you are a 6th or 7th grader, it is hilarious to watch. Then there is Matt Zunker, and if you go to Sussex school, you know that Matt is like a god. He is one of the kindest people that I have ever met, and he looks and is wise.

Mathcounts itself will help you prepare for high school. You will learn some high school math topics, and some topics that they don’t teach at school. After three years of this program I have learned so much. This program has made middle school math so easy for me, and will help me in high school too. I strongly recommend that every 6th grader and above should join this program, because it will bring the best out of you as a math student, and as a person.

Are you tired of watching Christmas movies every year and want a show that will immerse you into the holiday spirit? If so, this might be the show for you. The Guthrie theater located in Minneapolis opened on May 7th, 1963 has been wowing the attendee's with the magic of “A Christmas Carol” for an impressive 50 years.

Before you even sit down, the building alone sets the mood with its modern design and simple interior. One of the main pull factors for this building would have to be the walkway that stretches out from the building and has a stunning view of the Mississippi.

Inside the theater itself, the set shows candle lit streets, victorian designs and flurries of fake snow makes this story come to life. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge encapsulates the warm Christmas feeling, Scrooge's story of turning sour to jolly with a little help from those around him(Especially the four spirits) shows what the holidays can do for someone. The annual performance of this tell-tale story will always wow its attendee's and I hope anyone else that sees it will feel the same magic I did after watching it for the first time.

What were the Mavs thinking! I wake up in a hotel on a sunday morning drained from basketball the day before i take my phone from the charger and click on instagram and the first thing i see “ breaking new luka doncic traded to the lakers” I yell what what in my head trying not to startle my parents “this has to be fake” i say to myself so i scroll down some more and the next 3 scrolls are all about the trade. I wonder what everyone else thinks about it. What do you think about it?

For people who aren't that into basketball or don't know what this trade means let me give you some context Luka Donic is a 26 year old 5 time all star player and is in the mvp conversation, he is young, healthy and very talented now anthony davis is still a good player and is having a good season but anthony davis is old and injury prone and will probably retire. So what was the reason for this trade, the main reason was because of conditioning issues and overall physical discipline. Now the mavericks offence when they had luka was pretty much get the ball to luka or kyrie and isolate them and the mavericks where a very screen heavy team so if luka set a pick they would have many options on how to score luka could kick for a 3 or roll on to a mouse from a switch either way their offence was very good considering they had the ninth overall offence rating in the 2023-2024 season and this year they are 11th now even though that is only 2 spots it has only been 40 regular season games instead of 82 so we will have to wait and see but its not about how many points they score it's about winning now after the trade the mavericks record is 19-21 which right now the mavericks are 31-32 and at this pace they will not make the playoffs and since the trade the lakers have been on a role jumping all the way up to the number 2 seed in the western conference, so with all of that is it really a good trade.
