Plants are so incredibly cooperative with one another because cooperation is the most efficient way to grant the survival of species. Not understanding the strength of the community is one of [humanity’s] main errors. There was a very clever evolutionary biologist at the beginning of the last century, Peter Kropotkin, who said that when there are fewer resources, and the environment is changing, then cooperation is vastly more efficient [than competition]. It is thought that the changing of leaves to red, orange or yellow in the fall is a normal phenomenon caused by the deterioration of chlorophyll, which disappears to reveal other colors that were previously hidden by the green. But after a few weeks or days, the key substance that some plants produce to make their leaves change color disappears again. Why do plants bother doing this? William Hamilton of the University of Oxford suggests that the reason deciduous trees in the fall go to the trouble of making their leaves change color beautifully is presumably to send out a warning signal that they have the power to chase away aphids from coming any closer. Just as a gazelle, if it encounters a lion, its first reaction is not to run away, but to spring into place like a spring.
