The overthrow of Spanish King Ferdinand VII during the Peninsular War added to the instability in New Spain. The short version is that Spanish influence was dwindling. Pockets of resistance began to emerge one by one.
The Mexican War of Independence began on September 16, 1810, when Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Catholic priest, issued the Grito de Dolores, which was essentially a call to revolt against Spanish control. After 11 years of fighting, Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. The Mexican Empire's Declaration of Independence was ratified on September 28, 1821.
