Summary

This blog was kept essentially as a more interactive way for the class and Max to be digital pen pals while he was going to be out of school for a couple months while filming a movie in Toronto. Occasionally their teacher would right on behalf of the classroom and give updates of what they were doing. Often Max would write to give updates on what he was doing while on location in Toronto. He regularly included pictures to go along with what he was experiencing. Students were encouraged to comment on posts and write to Max. It appears that Max did his best to answer any questions he received in the comments as well. Many of Max's posts were filled with details of his busy schedule and all the emotions he was feeling throughout the process. Max was acting as a boy that is diagnosed with ALL leukemia. I found that the "Finding my Character" post to be the most poignant and eye opening. (and I think it was for Max as well).

Ideas: What makes this an active learning experience?

I think having a "digital pen pal" would be an active learning experience because Max was processing what he was doing throughout his day or week. He was also regularly processing what he was thinking about and what emotions he was feeling throughout the process. Max was basically having a weekly reflection while updating his class on his experience filming the movie.

I think that the classroom teacher could have also used his "digital letters" to pair with a "Respond, React, Reply" active learning strategy for the classroom. Or an opportunity for a "Think-Pair-Share" activity after reading the newest blog entry from Max.

I feel like the classroom could also do a 1-minute paper/reflection to try and put themselves in Max's shoes. "How would you feel in Max's shoes?" I feel like the details that he wrote would pair really well with a unit about writing how you are feeling, like a personal narrative but also pairing well with an SEL unit.

I think that this was a really cool way to allow Max to keep in touch with his classroom and keep a "digital diary" of his experience while working on the film. I think that it was also smart to have it be a blog and not just an email so that other students had the opportunity to write comments and questions to Max.
