The theme of this poem, is being afraid to be a responsible for anyone. Like being a role model or figure to someone else, and influencing their decisions. That owning someone is also not okay, " Possession, not optional." line 5. People need to be their own, and be who they are on their own. The meaning is also very similar to the theme. That Dickinson, or whoever this poem is about, is afraid to own someone, 'owning' as influencing, or being responsible for. "I am afraid to own a Body—
I am afraid to own a Soul." lines 1 and 2. Owning someone is a big responsibility.

The theme of this poem can mean multiple things. Different interpretations of the poem can give off different emotions. One theme or meaning is how you can be so scared of something, but the minute this fear approaches you, the fear you feel is almost expected, and okay. " Because that fearing it so long
Had almost made it fair." lines, 5 and 6. That facing your fear almost gets rid of them. And the fear you feel is okay, and expected. "A Fitting—a Despair
’Tis harder knowing it is Due." lines 9, 10, 11.
That after you face this fear, you will now be relieved of the fear.
