Collection: Word Signs

Display photos of the word signs around the studio. Photos of signs that were on walls would be on the studio’s walls. Signs on glass would be put on the big glass windows we have there. “Open” signs would be on doors or furniture that have doors. As if the signs were on the “right” place they should be;
It works but collection could be narrowed down to one word found in various types and formats on streets and stablishments.

Photos displayed on a big square grid organised by colour matching;
Too simple, it could be arranged in a more creative way.

Photos sorted by words inside envelopes hang on the wall. The meaning of the word would be written on it and photos to be taken from the envelope to be looked at;
The collection should be narrowed to one or three max words, so there could be many photos of the same word.

Sorting word sign photos by verbs, nouns and adjectives in three envelopes, one for each category.
Interesting display due to its different approach for the signs. The classification of the words brings out more meaning to the signs. They’re not just signs. They’re words and words have power.

Choose “aberto” and “open” signs only and place them on surfaces that can be opened or not, in a sarcastic way;
Collection might be more meaningful by not being so vague. It could be explored by different meanings of the word, different surfaces that could be put but still making sense to the whole collection.

Collection’s Presentation
Displayed in a colour grid, the dark background photos were put on the glass part of the studio’s entrance door (as shown in picture) and the light background ones on the white part of the door. The other medias developed during the week were attatched to the other door right beside the photo grid.

Feedbacks
Collegues suggested the presentation to have a clearer sorting, a more objective one. Photos were not conversing to each other in the way I organised. Also, photos could have been a little bit more apart from each other. They thought the concept was interesting and they understood the collection better when I told the idea of the word collection.

On the first period I made a stencil for the letter “I” and printed on coloured paper to understand how the paint changes on different colour surfaces. I chose yellow for the first paper and I noticed the paint colours did not change tones that much. Then on a blue paper, the yellow, green and purple paint had different tones when printed (I used the foam roll). And I experimented different positions to print the letter I: diagonal lower case “i”s lined up; upper case “I”s meeting endings but then it looked like an L, so I did not finish this one; both upper and lower case right beside the other; upper case “I” on red paint and another print on top of it on black paint but slightly arranged down in a diagonal to make it look like it has a shadow.

On the second period I made a stencil for the same letter “I” but in a different design. It had to have two layers for two different colours. The first layer was for the front part of the letter and the second one was for the “3D” part of the letter. The first layer was printed on the silk screen table. My stencil had an cut that was longer than the letter area, so this thin cut appeared on the paper (white paper). There wasn’t difficulty to print it because we had had that class last year. But some of the paint leaked and the print had a little stain. For the second layer I used the first print method with the foam roller. Then I also used wrinkled journal paper to print the others because the class was already cleaning everything up. (We waited a long time to use the silk screen machine.)

We started to make our 3D letter model. My letter was “I” and I sketched some ideas. Then I chose to work with the word “I” as in “I am/is important”. To represent the letter and the concept, I thought it would make a lot of sense if I made a person icon format because the head looks like the dot of the lower case “I” and also the body shape is thin and long. Gaia told me about eurythmy which is a type of artistic and therapeutic dance, and there’s this alphabet made with body movements. Letter I is represented with the right arm and hand positioned in the middle of the chest pointing up straight. And this represents the center of men connected with the sky and the earth. I wanted to represent this connection with paintings of flowers and leaves on the 3D model, but Cesar and Daniel suggested me to cover it with something less obvious. We discussed and I got to the conclusion that it would look better if I only used nature colours. But time was running up by 10pm and I had no acrylic paint (guache would ruin my parana paper model) so I found these coloured tapes and I thought ot would be great since it would cover and give the finishing touches. The model has the right arm positioned the way letter “I” is represented on the eurythmy alphabet. There wouldnt be any drawings to show that that is an arm and a hand, so I made curves where the arm and the hand is.

I finished covering my model with the tapes and displayed it on top of a table with some of the printings I made for letter I along the week.
The feedbacks I got were satisfying for me because it took a lot of me to do that and I really liked the outcome of this project. Ana said that she liked the model because it is good to look at and the concept conversed really well with the final result and presentation. Even though I missed two days, I still did everything from home, such as researches and sketches for the typography.

Protest!
The reference artists that I liked the most were Patrick Brill (posters made only with text) and Barbara Kruger (strong image contrast colours with text).
Six words I chose for the protest: beauty, self steem, healing, empathy, kindness and humor.
Mind map for the word “BODY IMAGE” that icluded the three first explored words (beauty, self steem and healing) brought many words and brainstorming ideas and texts (as shown in picture). I found it a bit hard to find some words to relate to body image so I looked up on Pinterest for some ideas to develop the texts. I also found some creative quotes to protest against body dysmorphia (which is what I intend to protest about, not only that but to also inform).
By the end of the class I still hadn’t had got to a final text. But then I saw this picture that had the word “war” on its text and I could relate to how people battle against their body looks and then “Make love, not war.” came to my mind. As if your own body were telling you that. So I added in the end: “— Your body.” as if it was signed by your body. I also had the idea of changing “Gay Pride” to “Body Pride” to give such importance to body dysmorphia as well.

We were trying on different collages. I collected some magazine images and made a lettering for Body Pride. I tried some solutions but I chose one to print out. The lettering got to be in the middle of an A4 horizontal paper, the images were around and in between the words. I got a very important image from my friend Bruna that hadany types of body and they were all posing with pride.

On the first period we displayed our 60 images printed on our desks so our colleagues could see and the curator of our group made some questions and gave us feedbacks. From all the images the ones I appreciated the most were Bruna’s for the bright colours and sharp images.
Then on the second period we experimented different materials that could work as filter lenses for cameras. I explored the colour tapes covering the flash on my cellphone. The results were very nice, the highlights of the images got the colour of the duct tape used. I also tried colouring a piece of acetato and cutting the middle in a rectangle shape so the. Olours can be seen only on the edges of the image and the focal center sharp.

We started sketching up some devices that would work as filter for the lenses of our cameras or cellphones. I thought of using a device I had back home already because it is a different lens that can be attatched to the cellphone camera and the lenses are removable so I could fit the painted acetato there if I cut it the right shape. The other idea I had was to use rubber bands as the holder of the filter. Then I decided to try some ideas on the DSLR camera. The first one was of making a camera case that would have the lenses part as well but with a transparency on the lens glass so the filters could be placed there right in front of it. I also thought of using a pringles packaging to fit the camera lenses and apply my acetato filters on the top part of it. The top would have the recrangle cut in the middle center and also the filters. And filters could be removed or changed.

25 photos

1. The first chosen was of a woman singing in a red dress and the background is dark almost all black. I thought the image had a strong feeling because of the colors, almost like a deep melancoly image. So I thought of adding a text to it. I sketched some ideas to write on it and they were all related to singing sad songs. I started with this idea of singing because of the singer and then the sad songs because of the feeling of the image. I got to the final text that says: We sing sad songs to our demons because they need to sleep.

3D photo object:
I used 4 photos I took with two of my filters combined. They are colourfull on the edges and the middle center is cut out in a vertical rectangle shape so the object can be focused properly. Two of the photos are of the sky, so there are the blurred coloured edges and the sky and clouds centered. These two photos were attatched to a parana paper cut in a hand size rectangle on both sides. Then I made a slight cut with the razor in the middle for folding. The other two photos are of ebac’s outside balcony floor. I chose these photos for the constrast idea of sky and land. Then I attatched them together making two cuts on the panama paper with the floor’s photos so the sky one could be fitted on top of it. The structures were fitted on the opposite direction, each one of them folded to about 120 degrees.
The photos have opposite definitions and are connected at the same time. The structure shows how the two photos are positioned to opposite directions but still connected to each other.

Presentation
I started organising the 60 images collection but not all of them were there. They were easily displayed because of the square crop I chose to take the photos with. The manipulated photos that had cutting interventions were placed on a black paper to have more contrast to be better seen. The sketchbook had some of the main processess and above that the camera with my object (filters) and the other solution for the cellphone camera.

Feedbacks from tutors:
Compliments on the organisation of the photos and conversation between the images. Nice sketchbook design of the processess and the 3D photo object was interesting and had a good display for the use of the images under it.

2. Subtracting: I chose an image that would make sense to cut something out. So I chose one that was of me and the ex boyfriend. I had a first idea of cutting his head out and then burning the edges of this cut. The second idea was to cut out the silhouette of him only. And that was the idea chosen. I wanted to give this idea that he is just not present in my life anymore and the first idea would show something too aggressive. Then Michael suggested I could subtract something else and I chose to add text throught cutting out from the image. The ideas were: Still whole, still myself and still me.

3. Stitching: I chose an image of myself as a baby when I was two. I decided to add stitching around the baby doll I have on my lap bexause I was really emotionally attatched to it. Then on another photo there were some ballons and I cut them out and sew it onto my chosen image.

4. Hole punching: The image chosen was of Fuji Mountain and a third of it is the sky. So I had the idea of punching many holes together to form a cloud shape where the sky is.

5. Combining techniques: I chose an image I took from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City and I made some hole punches on both top and bottom edges. Then I added red marker blinds to the animals’ eyes.

I really enjoyed doing this activity to generate ideas. I think I work better under time pressure and I also listened to songs while I was sketching the ideas. Many words from the songs lyrics helped a lot to have ideas and I was following a rule (maybe, it wasn’t intentional): all of them had a theme that involved creating many situations related to them in a fun way.
After this activity we laid down the sheets on the floor to have a better visual perspective. In the group I was in (me, Gaia, Bruna and Julia) we decided to get random two different ideas (it could be our own plus another’s) and create another idea combining those two together. We did that 3 times each and we told our ideas each round to each other in circle. It was nice because the ideas we had together inspired us to have many others.
After that, I started selecting the ones that had more to do with my ideals and what I wanna tell people. I ended up with 4 final ideas: About procrastinating, Ways to say sorry, Ways to say goodbye, To-do lists.

He explained what goes through in each year of the courses of Graphic Design and Illustration. I got even more confused but it helped clear some of the doubst I used to have. He told us about focusing on where we wanna go to as artists. If you want to tell the world something or is always protesting through your art, he suggested Graphic Design to learn how to communicate your ideas to the public. Bur if you want to follow briefings and have limits to illustrate non stop, Illustration is the path you should take. And for myself I would love if I could combine these too.

Today I did a better thinking on the theme of my publishing: Procrastinating. I want it to be funny and also easy to read but still with an ambiguity aka sarcasm/irony.
I made a mind map on the word Procrastinating and some of the things that I wrote were sub-themes so I developed personal situations ideas for each of them. I am still deciding on what I want to focus on because I want it to be very specific like “Excuses we give ourselves to make procrastinating seems awesome”, “Things we do to procrastinate” and “Things we wish to say to explain the procrastination”.
I also made some sketches of ideas that came to my mind. I used the Netflix logo and I wrote “I’ll do it later” to replace the Netflix name but using similar layout and font. Then I thought of doing a sequence of procrastinating on Netflix but that’s not what I want to do. Then I also had the idea of doing To-do lists, one on each page and following the sequence idea as well. So there would be something to do every day and from all the other to do things this would be the only one unchecked. That would go like this until the last page to show procrastination and represent these struggles with personal notes and doodles on the to do lists.

Producing day with Michael and Ana
Before I started producing, I had an important talk with Michael to help me choose a sub theme on the Procrastination one. I was lost with so many ways to go to make the zine that I didn’t know what to choose.
So Michael told me to test the ideas, really make them and perhaps I would have something done by the end of the day.
So decided to go with the sub-theme "Why we procrastinate" and I started to list the reasons why, which I had researched previously. This way would be easier to start writing the texts I want to use on my zine. I also wrote down what happens for each of the reasons. Then I was thinking of the feedback I had yesterday from the tutors about having a structure to the texts. I was thinking of writing them on different pieces of papers because that's where we usually write stuff we need to do. But I had found an artist during my research that writes very personal sayings on the cover of books he illustrates. So I started to think of the possible objects I could insert my text on because it could be more ironic if there was also an object there. Then I thought of a shoe box and I remembered of the Nike slogan that says “Just Do It” which is very related to the theme of my zine. I sketched the drawing and I played with the slogan and changed to “Won’t Do It” and as soon as I did that, the famous saying “I’ll start on Monday” came to my mind and that’s what I wrote on the shoe box. Since it’s a company related to healthy lifestyle this idea really made sense and I also could use sarcasm.
The other brand I tried to bring a solution to my work was Target because of the logo that is a minimalist target icon. The slogan says “Expect more. Pay less” and I tried playing with it but none of the sentences was causing such a big impact. And the idea was to illustrate the target logo with some darts outside of it to seem like I had missed the target. But I didn’t think the supermarket brand had a lot to do with Procrastination even though it doesn’t necessarily need to be related.

Then I moved on to that list I made with the reasons why we procrastinate. The first one was Perfectionism which results in delaying on your work until you’re sure other people won’t criticize it. So I imagined myself in this situation (which was easy because that’s something I go through a lot) and started to write down the text as if I was being really honest to myself or someone. The whole idea was to write very personal texts so the public that reads them could relate perfectly to it. There is this saying “Done is better than perfect” that I remembered of and included in it:

I don’t think I’m capable of doing it perfectly so I’ll just leave it for the done-is-better-than-perfect moment to come out of nowhere.

There were some attempts I sketched (on my sketchbook) and this one above was the most successful one. The “object I tried to write the text on was a pillow but that would be too obvious and since the texts are all ironic I thought the object should be as well.

The second one was avoiding dealing with the situation for fear of failing and being judged. I thought of myself when I used to work and the excuses I always wished to give on days that I had woken up very tired or hadn’t have a decent night sleep. Or when I had a presentation to make and anxiety attacked me. The first attempt (all sketches on my sketchbook) was veeeeery detailed and I thought I could be less honest and personal, bur just a little. And the outcome was this one:

Oh I just have a sore insecurity so I don’t think I’ll be able to make it cof cof better if I stay all day in bed and pretend I made my best decision.

Then I remembered of a to-do list because of the “distraction” item on thw list of reasons why we Procrastinate. I thought it was a good idea to be ironic and specific on the to-do list by calling it To-do Later and instead of having the things I would need to do, I would write what actually happened each time I tried doing them (distractions). And I made only one sketch but I went on changing it until I had this final one:

• Watch something on Netflix fornsix hours straight 
• Remember of those great stuff I don’t wanna do and don’t do them 
• Decide to start doing the stuff but go over my phone instead while I have something to eat 
• Watch meaningful Instagram stories from people I pretend to know them if I see them on the streets that post really meaningful stuff that adds a lot to my work 
• Go on facebook and laugh histerically at silly memes and tag my friends to pretend I’m not desperate cause Instill haven’t done the stuff I need to do
• Go to sleep with new hopes and promises that tomorrow I might get stuff done

And for this idea I thought of inserting this text on a piece of paper (it could be from a notebook or any paper we usually write our tasks for the day).

After trying these ideas I couldn't think of anything else, so I decided to work on what I already had. For the first text (the "perfectionism" reason) I thought it would be too "boring" to put my texts on pieces of paper only. I wanted to illustrate something that made contrast to the text. So I started thinking on things we pursue perfection to make them and artwork was the first thing that came to me and then I asked myself: what is something I could insert my text on that is related to artworks? And I answered myself: A PAINTING BUT NO PAINTING BECAUSE I "DIDN'T DO IT" SO A BLANK CANVAS IT IS. And the first sketch was interesting, I really liked it because the honest text about this specific procrastination is where the "work I didn't do" should be. And when I did the illustration on a larger paper (A4) I didn't like the result. It seemed like something was missing.

The second text (about avoiding dealing with) I imagined a scene where the person doesn't show up to a date because of the fear of failing. But I couldn't come to something to add the text on. So I asked Bruna and Gaia to help me with ideas and they both said the exact same thing: draw someone sitting on a dinner table for two and the text written in a person's silhouette structure as if the person who did not show up is there but the text is instead. But I thought this idea wouldn't be so successful on my zine because I'm working with more simple ideas than drawing a whole scene of someone being stood up by a scared procrastinator.Then I was scrolling down on Facebook aka procrastinating, and I found this ad of a clothing brand where there is a model wearing a huge white hoodie and I wondered if it would be nice to insert the text on the hoodie. So I tried and I did like it but still it wasn't enough. I also illustrate this idea on another paper with another picture but still the same hoodie and the result was no satisfying.

For the third reason (distractions) text I had decided already I would do on a piece of paper and scan it. So I found a yellow piece of paper and I tore it around on the edges so it looks like a random paper I got. Then I wrote everything down but I didn't love it because it looked different visually from the other illustrations. I think it was the colours, it was red black and yellow and the other illustrations were more pastel colour based.

Then I decided to try making the Nike shoe box idea to see how it looks or at least have it sketched for another project or maybe a continuation of it. On the sketchbook it looked really nice and when I tried on an A4 blank paper it got even better.

Individual critique with Cesar
His feedback on the sketches I made yesterday was helpful although it made me even more confused on where I should insert the texts. At first, he made a good point saying that my work is “too cute” and I think he said that because on the group talk when I still hadn’t decided how to make my theme, I told him and Daniel that I was going to focus on the texts only and maybe very simple illustrations. He also thought the Nike shoe box was too obvious and the one with the canvas illustration wasn’t on its highest potential. The texts were very good though. Then I showed him a reference artist which I enjoy her work a lot that combines rappers, overestimated brands with playful illustrations and light sarcasm (research file). He also liked her artistic language and then he could relate that better to my work. By the end of our conversation, he suggested me to follow only one language because they were all slightly different and didn’t converse that well to each other, like working with brands only would be an interesting idea since he also liked the Netflix one (Procrastinate and Chill).

Individual critique with Monique
As we all know, Monique loves objects and bright colouful stuff, so she really enjoyed the Nike shoe box one and suggested me to follow this path of applying the texts on objects. And before I was questioning myself if I should do the Netflix one on a laptop but I thought it would be too obvious as Cesar said. Then I got encouraged to try and see if it would work. And by the end of the night I had an official language to work with: texts on objects (specially procrastinationnrelated ones or overestimated brands).

At home I was a little worried about which objects I would put my texts on, because they were all so detailed and long and there were only few objects that I thought would be great for it. Then I was talking to my boyfriend and he suggested me to use the Spotify layout and play with songs’ names as the ones on the playlist would be “tasks” I should be doing but the song playing would be something to procrastinate on.

Sol and Leo

I got to the studio and started to figure out how I could illustrate the Spotify idea. At first the idea was to make a “to-do” list as it was described on yesterday’s reflection. But during my thoughts I also thought of using one of my already done texts. I tried the “Perfectionism” one as if it was the comments on the lyrics that some songs have. And the choice of song “playing” would be to make it funny or to make a constrast to the text. I went on my spotify list to select some songs that would match the text and it was really hard to chose one only. But I ended up chosing “The Motto by Drake” which gives the idea that I follow “procrastinating” as a lifestyle. I also played with the other texts the spotify layout has like: “Playing from your library Songs” to “Playing from your bedroom Floor” and “Behind the lyrics” to “Behind the chaos”.

Critique with Sol
I presented her my three outcomes for the zines that were done already: the Nike shoe box, Netflix and Spotify that I was still in the process. She liked these ideas and I asked for help to think of other objects to illustrate and for that we went over my post its texts. But I didn’t find them very useful because they were too obvious and not ironic as the others, so it wouldn’t converse well to the others.

Donuts brand idea
I started looking on pinterest and I saw the image of a donut and I remembered of the “donut do this to me” joke and then I started to try to fit some irony related to procrastination with Dunkin Donuts. Then I researched more brands and Krispy Kreme was interesting and I sketched some different texts I could play with the name and the texts on the donuts box. It was hard to find a really good text but I changed my idea into making it about the consequences if a procrastinator and I played with “The assorted dozen” into “the assorted breakdowns”, also I used the logo design to write instead “I’ll do it Later and go nuts”.

Finish colouring
I started to colour what was missing in the donuts illustration and then decided how the format of the pages would be. I think I could’ve planned that esrlier better but I am really happy with my idea. There was an issue on how to center the illustations on a portrait layout because of the shapes of the illustrations. Then I thought the square cut would be perfect. And also the Collector project I did that square cut as well in the pictures.

Editing scanned images
I had some trouble with the colour format because I first edited in photoshop and then in lightroom but I wasn’t sure if they were still CMYK after editing there. But I figured it out by checking the info of the image on the server.

Design layout for print

I had difficulty to make the guidelines on indesign because I didn’t remember exactly how to do it, I did it but it wasn’t how I wanted to. Then I tried using the rulers in Photoshop to create an A4 layout to print the zine pages using also the rectangular shape with a light gray stroke.

Print test/binding
The print test was really good quality I was just a bit concerned with the size of the donuts illustration because it’s difficult to read. And then I decided to bind the zines because it gives a more personal touch to the work since it’s all handmade (illustrations and texts) I guess it makes more sense.

Print official copies and posters and flyers
When I was almost ready to print the official copies, I made some A4 and A3 layouts to print more prints. So the A3 are posters (1 of each illustration separated) and the A4s are 5 copies of each illustration but in the A4 I managed to fit 2 illustrations so I can sell small ones, then people can buy only one illustration if they like to.

Bind and cut copies
I started binding all the zines and cutting them on the edges and it was okay because I had seen Monique teaching how to sew the zines.

Critique with Otavio

First I presented the whole process on my sketchbook and while that showing the outcomes and the final ones.
He agreed on the wide range of experimentations of ideas for illustrations and texts as he saw in the sketchbook many trials and mind maps and complimented on the ironic language I used. He said he read in a book that Irony was hard to write and that I did that successfully.
The techniques used to make the illustrations were a smart idea due to the concept of the work which is something very personal, he thought the handmade typography and drawings made sense to it. Also the paper chosen has a great quality and combined very well with the prints, except for the Donuts illustration that the text ended up being a little hard to read, so maybe the text could be larger or have a different size for the prints. He thought the Nike logo on the shoe box was too small and it could be larger and white as it is in the sketched one, but I respectfully disagree. I made it small and black to make it not so obvious and for the person reading the illustration to take some time, but to too much, to understand and giggle afterwards. And about the price he agreed on the prices because they all have good quality papers, print and finishing touches.
