Following Lean Startup principles, we are validating that there is student interest in this community initiative by providing a student informational session in West Hall during Oct. PD day. This "day off" will prevent class schedules from being a barrier. Student will learn about Traverse City Startup Community and the planned events and participation. More importantly, NMC is learning tools and processes used to drive innovation, e.g. testing of assumptions. These models drive concepts that educators often hear like "fail fast", but they don't necessarily understand the processes used when determining success or failure early. Learning will continue through the NMC event schedule as part of Startup Week on May 13.

Our students’ lives also don’t fit neatly into regularly scheduled “work hours.” The COVID-19 pandemic has forced us to try new ways of working and in the spirit of NMC’s highest value, we have learned a lot. What more can we learn? How can we incorporate these lessons into our work?

The team will then gather to share both concerns and best practices related to flexible and hybrid instruction. The day will culminate in a forward-thinking planning session as we discuss needs of the department, opportunities for collaboration, and plans for growth/sustainability for the next five years.

We will be learning best practices from our colleagues. Because Music, Audio Tech, and Dance instruction are intrinsically tied to in-person instruction, we will learn from each other how to navigate the murky waters of flexible and hybrid instruction.
