I was assigned to make Social media posts for Don John. In his first post, he writes "So Claudio and Hero are gettin' married, huh?", which is derived from "Means your lordship to be married tomorrow?". That is the quote starting the scene that where Don John tricks them into seeing Hero cheat. This is one of the more important scenes featuring Don John, as it greatly shows how he can be deceptive. In his second post, there is a picture of Don John being dragged away by the guards with a caption reading "Took a selfie on the way to the dungeon. I am not an honest person but to let it out, I'm just a plain-dealing villain.", which is derived from the quote "In this, though I cannot be said to be
a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I
am a plain-dealing villain.". As shown by the picture and the comment dialogue, the scene represented in this is when Don John is being dragged away. Although the quote is not from that exact scene, it shows how Don John is characterized as openly villainous. For one image, I chose a picture of Don john with the caption reading, "You may have defeated me in the war but it isn’t your turn to be happy now !"  This is showing his idea of revenge (also showing his deceptive and devious personality) because of Claudio and Don Pedro beating him in the war before just the start of the play. This also provides evidence to his obviously egotistical personality , seeking revenge in the face of defeat and not allowing someone to be above him or win him out like that , however , he does state “I cannot hide what I am.  I must be sad / when I have cause, and smile at no man’s jests; eat when I have / stomach, and wait for no man’s leisure; sleep when I am / drowsy, and tend on no man’s business..." , “I am a plain-dealing villain” . Don John can be described as evil, envious, devious, deceptive and malicious. Don John plays a major role in the play as he is responsible for ruining Claudio’s wedding with Hero and causing grief and harm to others around him. To portray Don John’s character, I created a playlist with five songs that Don John would listen to. One of the songs that resembles his villainous personality is I’m The Bad Guy by Caleb Hyles. A portion of the lyrics from the song that resembles Don John is “Oh, it's magic /To watch a planet /Shrivel up and die /Oh, it's thrilling /To be a villain /I destroy their hopes /And then I watch them cry /'Cause I'm the bad guy” This is based on a quote that Don John uses to describe himself: “In this, though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain. I am trusted with a muzzle, and enfranchised with a clog." This quote is from the scene where Don John was getting a massage from Conrad, one of his henchmen. In this scene, we get to learn more about Don John and who he really is as well as his evil intentions. This quote is important because it shows that Don John views himself as a villain and his intentions are to cause harm and grief to others. Don John’s motivation is his hatred for Don Pedro, his brother, and Claudio because he is envious of the success that Claudio and his brother have. This quote eventually leads to Don John tricking Claudio into believing that Don Pedro is going to take Hero for himself, which causes Claudio pain and makes him feel betrayed. This quote also shows how Don John is deceptive and devious. Another song that depicts Don John’s malicious and evil character is The Torture Tango by Joseph Walker, Mary Kate Wilkes, and Curt Mega. The part of the song that portrays Don John is “I’ve been waiting for this moment for /such a long time /And wouldn’t ya know it? /You’re finally mine /If you’re hurting, please show it /Don’t be ‘fraid to cry /And just for my enjoyment, you will /suffer /Suffer /Suffer /Until you die''. This is based on a quote that Don John says about Claudio, “This may prove food to my displeasure. That young start-up hath all the glory of my overthrow. If I can cross him any way, I bless myself every way.” This quote is from the scene where Borachio and Don John came up with the plan to ruin Claudio’s wedding. This quote is significant as it shows Don John’s hatred for Claudio and reveals that Claudio’s pain brings Don John joy. This quote is important because it leads to Don John tricking Don Pedro and Claudio into thinking that Hero is cheating on Claudio with Borachio. His devilous plan and action leads to the climax of the story when Claudio rejects, insults, and accuses Hero of cheating. This quote reveals the antagonistic and poisonous traits that Don John possesses. Although Don John tends to lie and deceive others to achieve his devilish plan, he is very true to himself and accepts who he is. On the other hand, we also see Don Pedro and Claudio, the honorable men in the play, use deception and trickery to trick Beatrice and Benedick into thinking that they were in love with each other. As we can see in the play Much Ado About Nothing, when put into perspective, there are less differences between honorable men and devious men as we originally think.

For my portion of the project, I was tasked with portraying Don John's amazon previous purchases list and to duplicate what Don John would say if he were to leave a review for 2 of those items. For one of these reviewed items, I portrayed a review by Don John for a book called "How to Manipulate People" based on the quote where Don John describes himself "In this, though I cannot be said to be a flattering honest man, it must not be denied but I am a plain-dealing villain." This shows that even though Don John has manipulated everyone around him to an extent to where they believe he is a "flattering honest man", he can't deny to himself that he is a "plain-dealing villain." The second item Don John "reviewed" was the book "how to be a villain" based on the quote "I cannot hide what I am: I must be sad when I have cause and smile at no man's jests, eat when I have stomach and wait for no man's leisure, sleep when I am drowsy and tend on no man's business, laugh when I am merry and claw no man in his humor."
