His comrades were wounded severely, instead of abandoning his precious team mates, he ran over to them and carried them across, the land filled with fire and debris, also being fully exposed and wide-open for his enemy to attack.

The Lance Corporal is brave and has a kind heart, he (probably) already knows the values of Whanaungatanga, he takes risks completely different than Christian Huriwai, because Christian, took a risk to try and beat the world record, for himself, however Willie took a risk for the sake of himself and for the sake of his fellow soldiers, kinda in a way of a hero.
