A theme in the book "How To Kill A Mockingbird" by Harper Lee is bravery. For example,during the jail scene, and Scout runs ahead to see Atticus, he just started talking. While she was in this group of strangers that were threatening them, Scout says, "Hey, Mr. Cunningham." The man did not here me, it seemed. "Hey, Mr. Cunningham. How's your entailment gettin' along?" (Lee 152). Scout didn't hesitate to even mention entailments at her age, with strangers all around. This shows a huge about of bravery.

One of the many themes presented in To Kill a Mocking Bird was the theme of Guilt. This theme was especially prevalent in the trial scene. This was when Tom Robinson was accused of rape and he attempted to defend himself. An example of this would be when Atticus makes his last speach for the jury, "I say guilt, gentlemen, because it was guilt that motivated her. She has committed no crime, merely broken a rigged time honored code in our society." There are vary many themes in To Kill a Mocking Bird, but i feel like big one is courage. threw out the book Atticus is trying to teach Scout is that she needs to be able to walk away from people that are trying to hurt her or antagonize her and that thats courage to do since Scout is ready to tie in to a fight a lot of the time. Also Atticus is showing a huge amount of courage by defending someone in court that doesn't exactly have the public on his side ,because he knows it the right thing "Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win" (Atticus 76)

One of the themes in the book To Kill a Mockingbird is the idea that no matter a person's race or income, every man is equal. "She was white and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man",(Lee 206). This quote is a perfect example of the ignorance that white man withheld during this time period. Unlike Atticus Finch, the majority of the white men and women throughout the book have discriminated the African American race because they feel that they are superior. "Alexandra, Calpurnia's not leaving this house until she wants to. You may think otherwise, but I couldn't have got along without her all these years",(Lee 139). This shows us that Aunt Alexandra also discriminated the African Americans and told Atticus that she thought that Calpurnia's presence might harm Scout's childhood. The black race is clearly inferior in the eyes of a white man at this time, and because of this, the black race clearly resented the white race as Lula does when the Finch children's where invited into the black church.

In the novel, To kill a Mockingbird, the underlying theme is judgment and how we as the human race judge people before we really get to know the truth about the person and who they really are. Throughout the story the kids come across different people and their perceptions of them change throughout the story. For example Boo Radley, Ms.Dubose, Mr.Dolphus Raymond, and Tom Robinson are all characters that were judged by the children and others and then proven to be thought about differently. Scout first believes Mr.Dolphus Raymond to be an evil man for having mixed children and getting involved with a Negro, but then later has a changed perception when she states,"I had a feeling that I shouldn't be here listening to this sinful man who had mixed children and didn't care who new about it, but I found him fascinating. I had never encountered a being who deliberately perpetrated fraud against himself."(Lee 201) This quote is important because it supports the central idea that we can change how we view people. Judgement is the curtain that hides us from viewing the whole truth and the real person.

(Lee 156) Since this was the case, Atticus was the "odd man out" because of his perseverance for helping out Tom Robinson. Atticus knew that it wouldn't be easy to accomplish this task, but still succeeded in trying to, no matter how much criticism he faced. He was determined to help out Tom, even though people's views about equality were different. He knew that Tom had faced persecution for what he was on trial for, and was there to help him. Atticus knew that equality was very important to their town, and tried to improve it. This shows that equality has a major significance in the book.

In To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, one of the main themes is inequality. Mr. Ewell and Mayella Ewell tried to frame Tom Robinson for beating Mayella. They had no evidence except that he was a Negro. "What was the evidence of her offense? Tom Robinson, a human being" (Lee 203). Mayella had no actual evidence that he beat her other than her father who was not colored. There is a lot of inequality for Negros in Maycomb. Even though evidence was packed up showing that Tom did not beat Mayella the jury still convicted him and mostly on the basis that he was a Negro and that he cannot be trusted with anyone alone.
