A boycott is a refusal to do something or go somewhere as a punishment or protest. The US decided to boycott the 1980 Moscow Games and over 45 other countries followed. The goal was to protest against the Soviet Union (who hosted the 1980 olympics) who invaded Afghanistan. In 1984, the US hosted the Olympics and the Soviet Union along with its allies boycotted the olympics and didn’t go.

In 1980, February 22nd, Team USA and Team USSR faced off in the final round of men's hockey. The USSR was called the “Red Machine” because of all the gold medals they have received for hockey. The USSR was up 3-2 with the USA trailing behind at the end of the second period. Some thought the USA could actually win this game, then in the third period the USA scored 2 more points and took the lead. The announcer on ABC shouted “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!” and the USA took victory with 4 -3. This caused national excitement among the Americans because of the Cold War battles between them and the USSR.
