Brown v. Board of Education (1954)

Before this Harry Truman had issued an executive order to end segregation in the military. The case was about Mr.Brown wanting his young daughter to go to the white school near his house and not the black school all the way across town. The case was taken to the supreme court and ruled that racial segregation would be ended in public schools,However many schools stayed segregated. This was important because it was the end to segregation in most schools.

Montgomery Bus Boycott (1955)

Before this event Rosa Parks had gotten out of work and went to go get on a bus to go home. She was sitting in her seat when a white man told her to go to the back of the bus so he could sit there. She said no. So she ended up getting arrested and being sent to jail. This caused the start of the Montgomery Bus Boycott where people would refuse to ride the bus until the rules for black passengers changed. This is important as it shows change through peaceful protests.

Organization of Non Violent Protests (1957)

The organization of these non violent protests happened just over a year after Rosa Parks was arrested for not giving up her seat on a bus. Many black pastures including Martin Luther King Jr. organized these protests. These protests were important as they were happening for years and garnered more support for these peaceful protests.

Little Rock Nine (1957)

Before the Little Rock Nine there was the popularization of peaceful protests mainly due to MLK. The story of the little rock nine was that Little Rock Central High was that 9 black students wanted to go to Little Rock Central High but the school didn't want this so much they had military officers outside the school. This caused the president to send in troops to accompany the black students for weeks to make sure they could go to school. This showed that black rights were inevitable at this point.

Greensboro sit-in 1960

The background to the Greensboro sit-in was that some black people walked into a white only lunch counter and just asked for something to eat. This was important as it inspired other similar sit-ins.

Freedom Riders

The background to the freedom riders was that black and white activists took trips throughout the south to protest segregated bus terminals. They were "marked with horrific violence". This was important is it brought international attention to the black rights movement.

Children's Crusade

The backstory behind the Children's crusade is that more than 1000 black children marched the streets to demonstrate against segregation. They were hosed down and arrested for doing this. in the end they ended up desegregation lunch counters,business and lunch rooms. This was important as this was another step forward towards black people having the same rights as white people.

March on Washington

About 250,000 people marched on washington to hear MLK give his "I Have a Dream" speech. This was important as it showed how much support the black rights movement had.

Malcolm X assassination

Before his assassination Malcolm X had left the Nation of Islam because Muhammad was guided only by religion and Malcolm X wasn't. He was assassinated by members of The Nation of Islam during a speech. The effect of this is that he was remembered as a powerful black figure that fought for black rights.
