President Abraham Lincoln ordered a Union General, Irvin McDowell over the Virginia border into northern Virginia to attack the Confederates, led by General P.G.T. Beauregard. This occurred northeast of Manassas Junction. The main goal of this battle was to push the Confederates back to Richmond, Virginia and conclude the war. The Confederates had many communication errors during the battle. Colonel Stonewall Jackson ended up maintaining control of high land on Henry House Hill, that is how he got the name "Stonewall."
