I think it is essential that the use of AI has to be pedagogical and really has to have a concrete purpose. In the past we have seen how electronic devices have been introduced first in the classroom without knowing exactly whether a traditional activity or one using ICT was better. Not all activities should be done with ICT and not all activities should be done in a traditional way, I think the teacher's judgement is very important here, we should be able to apply both AI and technology with very good judgement. Therefore, AI is a guide and a reference but it can never be a substitute, the teacher is responsible for using AI for an effective purpose, not just as a fashion.

I use it mainly for reinforcement activities or extension activities that require a higher level or practice. As it can be regulated by levels, this allows different educational levels of the same subject.

Achieving a balance between harnessing the benefits of technology and preserving the authenticity of the teaching and learning experience is crucial for effective education in the 21st century. Technology offers a plethora of tools and resources that can enhance learning, making it more engaging, accessible, and personalized. However, it is essential to integrate technology thoughtfully, ensuring that it complements and supports traditional teaching methods without overshadowing them.

Harnessing the Benefits of Technology

Technology can revolutionize education in several ways:

Personalized Learning: Technology enables adaptive learning platforms that tailor instruction to individual student needs and learning styles. This personalized approach can significantly improve student engagement and outcomes.

Enhanced Access and Flexibility: Online learning and educational resources provide greater access to education for students in remote areas or those with non-traditional schedules. This flexibility allows students to learn at their own pace and from anywhere.

Interactive and Engaging Tools: Technology offers a wealth of interactive and engaging tools, such as simulations, virtual reality experiences, and gamified learning, that can make learning more captivating and memorable.

Real-time Feedback and Assessment: Technology facilitates immediate feedback and assessment, allowing educators to monitor student progress and provide timely interventions.

Preserving the Authenticity of the Teaching and Learning Experience

While technology offers immense benefits, it is crucial to preserve the authenticity of the teaching and learning experience:

Human Connection and Collaboration: Technology should not replace the human element of teaching. Face-to-face interactions, group discussions, and collaborative projects are essential for fostering social-emotional skills, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Authentic Assessment and Evaluation: Technology can supplement assessment methods, but it should not replace traditional forms of evaluation, such as essays, presentations, and practical demonstrations.

Digital Literacy and Responsible Technology Use: Educators must teach students how to use technology responsibly, critically evaluate information sources, and protect their privacy and security online.

Balancing Technology and Authenticity

Effective education requires a balanced approach that leverages the strengths of technology while preserving the authenticity of the teaching and learning experience. Here are some key considerations:

Purposeful Integration: Technology should be integrated into the curriculum with clear learning objectives and a thoughtful pedagogical approach.

Teacher Professional Development: Educators need continuous support and training to effectively integrate technology into their teaching practices.

Student-Centered Approach: The focus should be on how technology can enhance student engagement, learning outcomes, and overall educational experience.

Mindful Use of Technology: Technology should not be an end in itself but rather a tool to support and enrich the teaching and learning process.

However, we should use AI generated rubrics as suggestions which we may have to tailor to better meet our students' needs. Assessment is very important to students. It's a way to reassure and encourage them. Assessment can contribute to create a trusting, emotional bond which enhances learning. AI is able to create positive feedback, but thank goodness it is not able to convey or take feelings into account. Humans can.

AI gives us tools for evaluation, it does not become an evaluator itself. That is, there is always the mediation of the teacher who explains the results, gives feedback, encourages. Rewarding from the AI is not so important for the student if his success is not also recognised by the teacher. Similarly, a student's frustration can be mitigated by the teacher's words of understanding and encouragement. The teacher is also the one who will foster a cooperative, non-competitive climate in his classroom, not emphasizing results as much as effort. Therefore, the teacher-student relationship is always a very important element and is irreplaceable.

Above all, at the level of teacher-student interaction and between pairs of students, thus strengthening and promoting active participation in the teaching-learning process.

- Monitoring and formative evaluation: the important thing is to establish monitoring of learning throughout the teaching-learning process. This way, the teacher (and the student) will be able to identify weaknesses (and weak points) in order to guarantee a successful path. Monitoring the effectiveness of strategies also seems important to me.

- Encourage collaboration and interaction between students - it is desirable to promote activities that encourage collaboration and interaction between students, promoting, in parallel, sharing and construction of knowledge. In particular, through pairs of students when one could be a kind of tutor for another with more weaknesses

- Encourage the ethical use of AI, within the scope of so-called “good practices” as well as issues relating to the authorship of the work carried out.

Integrating AI into our educational practices should aim to augment and enrich the teaching experience, not to supplant it. To successfully navigate and reap the benefits of this integration, it is imperative that both teachers and students undergo comprehensive digital literacy training. As educators, we need to lead by example, becoming adept digital citizens ourselves, thereby guiding our students to not only proficiently utilize technology but to do so responsibly and ethically. This approach ensures that technology acts as an empowering tool in the educational landscape, enhancing our teaching methodologies while keeping the human essence of education intact.

There is still a lot of work to be done to understand how to use AI in assessment. I think a good equilibrium between AI resources and teacher input is necessary in order to make the learning experience adequate.

Teachers provide a human touch and understanding that technology, at its current stage, cannot match. They foster a supportive and engaging learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, explore their interests, and develop their critical thinking skills.

Therefore, a harmonious balance between technology and human expertise is essential for optimizing the teaching and learning experience. Technology can serve as a powerful tool to enhance instruction, provide personalized learning experiences, and streamline administrative tasks, allowing teachers to focus on the core aspects of their profession – nurturing young minds, inspiring curiosity, and cultivating lifelong learners.

It's the kind of magic that you can find in a theater or a music live performance: you can watch them in a screen, but nothing compares to the exchange of energy generated by the public and the artist. This happens in a classroom, too. AI should be kept for unmeaningful, pointless, time consuming, repetitive teaching tasks like burocracy, planning boring performance reports... and save human time and intervention to create.

In navigating the integration of AI tools into assessments, it's pivotal to maintain a delicate equilibrium between capitalizing on technological advantages and safeguarding the authenticity of the teaching and learning experience. AI, rather than supplanting human interaction, should function as a supportive tool, enhancing teaching rather than replacing it. AI feedback should be seen as a dynamic tool for growth rather than a static measure of success or failure. Therefore, investing in teacher training is necessary, as we need the skills and knowledge to effectively integrate AI tools into teaching and assessment.

We should embrace use of AI for assessment as a time saving application to generate assessment tasks for formative assessment. Then it can be used to show the students can use it critically. I devised a class discussion on the use of AI (ex. ChatGPT) when writing down the discussion for a lab report in Physics. Students were shown an exemplar report to which they were asked to add on details using this tool. It enabled that students worked collaboratively, analysed text generated and assimilated to what was discussed in that section so that any extra material was removed. This then served as an exemplar full lab report to refer back to.

Such a task not only is fun and innovative but also empowers them for the world of work in the future using these new effective technology.

Teachers should think of A.I. tools as a supportive partner not as someone who will do all the work for them. But first, teachers must possess a considerable teaching experience to decide what is the vital in the teaching and learning experience and should be left to them and what help the A.I. tools can give. Also, what A.I. tools produce should be examined thoroughly to see if it 'matches' the teaching context and if it serves the skills we want students to develop.

We and students need to think critically and solve problems on our own and not relying on it. We need to see if it fits our context and the goal towards which we need to use it. Also, we need to monitor it to ensure that diversity and fairness is not lost. We should be there to facilitate students’ learning with AI in more personalized routes and give quick feedback. Social-emotional skills need to be enhanced and not lost due to AI use. So tasks involving practicing them need to be devised. Critical thinking skills and digital literacy abilities prepare students to critically examine the outputs of AI systems and comprehend their limitations and potential biases. A consideration is of course is whether all students have access to it outside the classroom.

To effectively integrate AI tools in assessment while preserving the authenticity of teaching and learning, educators need to implement strategies that balance technology’s strengths with human oversight and ethical considerations. Here are some key strategies to consider:

1. Emphasizing Human Oversight and Teacher Judgment

AI should be used to complement rather than replace human judgment. Teachers should review AI-generated results and feedback to ensure that they align with the context and learning objectives. This means actively monitoring AI outputs and making adjustments when necessary to maintain educational integrity. For example, using AI to automate routine tasks like grading multiple-choice questions can save time, but subjective tasks such as essay grading should still involve human oversight to account for nuances in language and interpretation.

2. Designing Assessments That Prioritize Process Over Product

To maintain the authenticity of student learning, assessments should focus on the learning process rather than just the final product. AI can help track a student’s progress over time, highlighting areas of growth and development. By incorporating formative assessments like journals, drafts, and reflections into grading rubrics, teachers can use AI to support learning without making it the sole evaluator. This approach prevents over-reliance on AI-generated evaluations and emphasizes continuous learning and improvement.

3. Promoting Transparency and Ethical Use

Educators should be transparent about how AI tools are used in the classroom, including which data is collected, how it is stored, and how the AI makes decisions. Providing students with this information fosters trust and helps them understand the limitations and benefits of AI. According to the European School Education Platform, adopting clear ethical guidelines for AI use in education is crucial for addressing data privacy concerns and ensuring that AI applications are used responsibly(

European School Education Platform

).

4. Incorporating Authentic and Application-Based Assessments

Use assessments that require students to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts, such as project-based learning or case studies, which are more difficult for AI to replicate. This ensures that students engage deeply with the content and demonstrate their understanding in creative ways. For example, AI can support research and organization of ideas, but the actual synthesis and application should be student-driven.

5. Developing AI Literacy and Critical Thinking Skills

To preserve the authenticity of learning, students must be taught how to critically engage with AI tools. This means helping students understand the strengths and limitations of AI, recognize bias, and evaluate AI-generated content. Promoting AI literacy as part of the curriculum empowers students to use these tools thoughtfully and ethically.

6. Blending AI with Peer and Self-Assessment

AI can be used to support peer and self-assessment by providing automated feedback on drafts or early submissions. However, combining this feedback with structured peer review or self-reflection activities ensures that students engage deeply with the material. For example, AI tools like Grammarly can help identify surface-level errors, but peer assessment can address content, argumentation, and creativity.

7. Implementing AI with Context-Specific Rubrics

Create context-specific rubrics that are tailored to the learning goals and subject matter. While AI can analyze patterns and provide initial feedback, context-specific rubrics ensure that assessments are aligned with the specific skills and knowledge being evaluated. This approach helps maintain the human element in assessment and ensures that learning outcomes are accurately measured.

8. Regularly Reviewing and Updating AI Tools

AI technologies are constantly evolving, and it is essential to regularly review the tools being used to ensure that they meet educational standards and are free from bias. Educators and institutions should evaluate AI systems for potential biases or errors and update their usage policies accordingly to maintain the integrity of the assessment process.

Conclusion

Striking a balance between leveraging AI benefits and maintaining authentic learning experiences requires thoughtful implementation, ethical considerations, and active human involvement. By focusing on transparency, process-based learning, and critical engagement, educators can harness the power of AI while preserving the human-centered nature of education. This approach will lead to a more balanced and effective integration of AI in assessment, enhancing rather than detracting from the learning experience.
