Carbines were lighter than other rifles, shorter than other rifles, and was used most often by cavalry soldiers. The breech-loading rifles, unlike the muzzle-loading rifle, was loaded in the breech, the bottom end of the gun. The Pennsylvania long rifles could shoot up to 200 yards but was very slow on reloading, so it was not ideal on the battlefield. Cavalry pistols were often used in pairs, and stayed in pouches called holsters until needed. Hand grenades were smaller, rarer weapons that exploded when a lit fuse reaches gunpowder in the grenade. The tomahawk were small axes, that started out on the frontier for cutting wood, but were deadly on the battlefield, for they could become a throwing star.
