Freshman Bayou Bin Project of 2017

During my first year of high school, I was assigned a group and tasked with designing and building a device that could help clean up the Bayous around Houston, Texas. Therefore, my group and I created a manual cleanup device, made of one empty water jug, PVC pipe, duct tape, netting, and superglue. Once we had our materials, we cut the bottom of the water jug off and placed the PVC pipe through the handle of the jug. We then duct taped the PVC pipe to the jug, using superglue as well. Finally, we placed a small piece of netting on the top of the jug, where the lid would normally be. Once we had the finished product, we took a field trip to White Oak Bayou and tested our "Bayou Bins." Ours was able to effectively remove trash from the bayou, as can be seen with the link below
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1hJjPu3Bw1rmpSZ-ruOrxL77Jux-dhDm2ttM7QRqXK3c/edit

Sophomore Mars Colony Project of 2018

During Fall of 2018, our group of 4 students was assigned to create a robot for sorting marbles into different boxes. The different colors of marbles represented food, fuel, and oxygen for a colony we would also be designing- on the planet Mars. We brainstormed ideas and even made a prototype out of cardboard. We eventually got to use robotics pieces from the engineering stores which we used to create and code our sorting machine. In the end, our conveyor belt like machine was able to sort the marbles, though not as consistently as we would have liked. The link below shows the slides from our project.
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1NuU4VTZebwRFF7Qvk_wvlg1_bCfUK6ewWpuS9gd3KDE/edit#slide=id.g44cc90fc29_1_5

Junior Charcoal Project of 2020

During Spring 2020, our group was tasked with creating charcoal from organic waste. In the end, we decided to create a "device" that we could burn organic waste in and create charcoal. This device was made using paint cans, glue, tape, and of course, organic waste. We fashioned the paint cans into a kind of fire pit system with controlled ventilation in order to make sure we were monitoring the flame for the creation of charcoal. The website detailing our project research and process is provided in the link below.
https://sites.google.com/view/chamales/home
