1) Mechanical Hound

The Mechanical hound is mentioned and seen to be a symbol of "dead" when, "The Mechanical Hound slept but did not sleep, lived but did not live in its gently humming, gently vibrating, softly illuminating kennel back in a dark corner of the firehouse" (Bradbury 24).
This quote connects to the theme, "Dead vs. Alive", as it describes the mechanical hound to be both alive and dead. Although it holds no emotion, this symbol is described to be sleeping and living. The mechanical creature was built to be functioning with living characteristics and actions that may make it seem alive; but in contrast, it was also "dead" as it held no grudges, or feelings whatsoever.

Towards the beginning of the text, Montag describes the men who filtered out Mildred's blood with, "The other machine, operated by an equally impersonal fellow in nonstainable reddish-brown coveralls."
The men described by Guy seem to be both dead and alive, for they are alive with hearts and brains, but they don't feel anything, because they are "impersonal." These men almost act like plumbers that filter out blood, just as if they were fixing pipes and filtering water, and because of this, Montag is frightened, and it is almost as if he is afraid that the men had done something bad to his wife, "Strangers come and violate you. Strangers come and cut your heart out. Good God, who were those men? I never saw them before in my life" (Bradbury 16).

The theme "Dead vs. Alive" is displayed by Bradbury, and he is very descriptive with the symbols and how they correlate to the theme. The Mechanical Hound and the "cleaning" men both are seen as dead and alive because of the characteristics that are shown through their actions, but Clarisse McClellan acts and is truly alive, and because of this individuality, the protagonist, Guy Montag, doesn't know how to react, and neither does the government, resulting in her death.

From the first words spoken to this mysterious and lively girl to the last, Guy Montag has always felt that Clarisse McClellan was really alive. "Impossible; for how many people did you know who refracted your own light to you? ... What incredible power of identification the girl had" (Bradbury 11). Montag doesn't know what to think about Clarisse because she is the first person he's met that hasn't acted like everyone else, and because of this, she is really "alive."

The symbol we used was a ghost because ghosts used to be alive, but they are considered "dead" now because their "true" form of a human is now dead. This correlates to the theme "dead vs. alive" because ghosts are both dead and alive. They carry out actions of living things but they, in fact, are not.
