What stage was I at the beginning of the unit?

Based on my first and second performance clips, the stage I was at at the beginning of the unit was 'associative'. As I understood the specific mistakes I was making, but needed time to practise these by breaking them down before they could come together in one fluid movement. The areas of performing a round-off I specifically struggled with at the start, was having bent knees when my legs were above my head, as well as bringing my legs together too early for the landing making the movement slightly awkward. And because of this, I lost balance during my landing, causing me to not be able to stand up straight and still after the round-off. These areas of improvement can be seen in my first and second performance videos from my first two training sessions. As well as not starting with my hands high enough in the air before lunging in preparation for the movement, which is highlighted in the rubric.

TYPE OF PRACTICE: My best training session was when I followed a 'fixed practice' plan I created for my third practice, after following whole-part-whole practices before hand.

WHY IT WAS EFFECTIVE: The reason this practice was so effective in improving my round-off was because of how it broke down each little step. Picking out anything I was struggling with and perfecting it before moving onto the next thing. In particular, I broke down the steps and placed them into the three categories I have in my rubric (approach, performing and landing). The 'performing' section helped the most, as I slowly built up to the full movement, but could do it in a more controlled environment. Without the momentum from the approach distracting me from the correct placement my body should be in for the actual movement. Additionally, I also practiced the landing on the air track as I found that the extra bounce allowed me to have more time in the air, causing my feet to come together before touching the ground. Creating a softer and more balanced landing position.

My Practice with the Least Improvement

TYPE OF PRACTICE: The practice that gave me the least improvement, was the one I had after my 'best practice' and it was a 'variable' practice.

WHY IT HAD THE LEAST IMPACT ON IMPROVING MY PERFORMANCE: This training session had the least amount of impact on my performance, as the varied environments that I chose to do my round-off in confused my previous knowledge on how to perform the movement. As I needed to adapt to each environment quickly before moving onto another, (which had different levels of cushioning on the ground) then for some of the exercises I was adding elements. Specifically the forward roll which threw my sense of orientation during the landing as I was straight away moving into a new movement that I hadn't practiced well beforehand. Overall, this training session didn't focus enough on the small tweaks I needed to make at this point during the unit to my round-off. But instead all my energy and effort was put into adjusting the movement (in particular the landing and approach) every time I changed environments, which wasn't helping me achieve my final goal in the best way possible.

My self evaluation of my progression in this unit for my round-off is that, overall I think I have graduated from the 'associative' stage that I started at. And would now describe this skill for me in the 'autonomous' stage much more. As when performing it now I don't need any aid, or multiple tries before I land it/get it perfectly. I think I have improved a great deal in my round-off, that I will most certainly be including it in my Performance Week gymnastics sequence. Specifically you can see how I have greatly improved the areas I once struggled with in my 'Final Performance Clip.' As my legs come together much later in the movement (closer to the landing), which gives the skill a more cleaner look as my legs came together too early before making it look 'messy.' And because of this, my feet land at the same time to make a comfortable and balanced landing. Where I am able to stand up straight and have my arms in the air. Finally, my approach to the skill (my run up and lunge) is well timed and fuelled with enough momentum to kick my legs up and above my head for this a refined movement.
