There are several existing theories as to why no Christian art exists before the 3rd century. Some theorize a Christian vocabulary might not have existed, or that in response to the abundance of Pagan Roman art depicting individuals and gods Christians decided not to make art. Another theory stands that it was possibly the second commandment that determined the lack of art.

The catacombs were dug out of natural tufa, the stone of rome. tufa is a naturally soft material which makes it perfect for this kind of thing. One of the most amazing things about the catacombs is that passage ways were stacked on top of each other. In some places it it was three stories deep. The individual slots were covered with a slab of marble, or the poor had terra-cotta covered with a layer of plaster.

One myth associated with the catacombs is that Christians, in times of religious persecution, would practice their religion in a secret place inside the catacombs.
