In Turkish culture we care about nature so wasting is not accepted by families. For example if there are leftovers from yesterday’s meal we eat it first. It is same for bread. We also even have cultural jokes about Turkish dads. In every family dads are always like ‘ who left the lights open? Who left the tv on? Turn it off!’ That’s why we can understand that my cultural background really affects the whole situation. In old times we used to have home economy lesson and it was about teaching kids saving and controlling budget. We don’t have it anymore but still the idea is embedded in our curriculum.

I think that education can be structured within a program and curriculum. Therefore, if we want the school's learning community to focus on the Sustainable Development Goals and to be individuals who make the world better with actions and produce solutions to global problems, I think that the education program supports this and should be flexible in this sense. An education program content such as the IB program, which has imposed global problems on its learners from a young age and develops its skills at this point, can create this vision in learners by placing the Sustainable Development Goals at the center of the education program as a member of the Global School. In this sense, I think that the role of education has a tremendous impact on the learning community.

As my friend also mentioned, Turkish culture definitely supports SDGs. Families are very conscious in this sense. While we used to do this implicitly within the family, I think we have started to do it consciously now that SDGs are at the center of our lives. While leaving the water running while brushing our teeth and leaving the lights on has been a warning in our culture since the past and has been reflected everywhere, we can now see that the separation of garbage, recycling of waste, quality education, health, and environmental actions are reflected in families at home. It is time for this to be the goal of the entire culture, but the infrastructure of our culture is also quite suitable for this.

While the thinking phase and the formation of awareness of this both as a human and as an individual really happens in a very short time, there may be difficulties in taking action or creating an environment that will support this action. It is very important that sensitivity is understood by everyone and that the language and actions of the family and school community support each other. School is a simulation of life and at this point, although it is sometimes difficult to ensure that everyone embraces this with the same sensitivity in order to prepare actions and environments that will allow the awareness gained at school to be reflected in daily life, since our school community is very aware of this, this process is becoming more positive for our community every day.
