         <description><![CDATA[<div>More energy consumption means more coal-fired power plants and more devastation caused by coal extraction. It also means more demand for hydroelectric dams and nuclear power plants, with associated hazards to surrounding areas. And it means more emissions of soot and other air pollutants into the atmosphere by power plants burning coal and other fossil fuels. For every kilowatt-hour of electricity used in your home, power plants release an average of 1.34 pounds of CO2 into the environment. All in all, reducing energy consumption is the key to a healthier planet. The household refrigerator changed the way people ate and socially affected the household. They were no longer dependent on ice delivery and they didn’t have to make provisions for it like leaving a key or leaving the door open.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>consumers used iceboxes (literally boxes with ice) to keep their food cold, but food safety was an issue. When the ‘electric refrigerator’ was finally introduced it was more than just a convenience, it was an invention that saved people’s lives.  Refrigerators have evolved considerably since the 1900s both in appearance and function. The early units placed the cooling device on top of a small boxy unit while today’s sleeker multi-door units place the cooling units unseen on the bottom. The new efficiency measures are the latest in a <a href="http://www.appliance-standards.org/sites/default/files/Refrigerator_Fact_Sheet_Aug_25_2011.pdf">series of standards</a> over 40 years that have helped to significantly bring down the cost of running a typical refrigerator. A fridge that just meets the new standards will use $215 to $270 less per year in electricity than a comparable unit that met the first state standards set in 1978. Before 1830, food preservation used time-tested methods: salting, spicing, smoking, pickling and drying. There was little use for refrigeration since the foods it primarily preserved ( fresh meat, fish, milk, fruits, and vegetables)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div> Refrigerants like sulfur dioxide and methylchloride were causing people to die. Ammonia had an equally serious toxic effect if it leaked. Frigidaire discovered a new class of synthetic refrigerants called halocarbons or CFCs (chlorofluorocarbons) in 1928. Negative effects of this technology is that it stops working when the electricity stops working. In some big countrys, the power is shut down in different areas every couple of hours in order to save and spread electricity all over the country. Since all the power and electricity will shut down so will the refrigerator. They are also very expenisve and difficult to maintain.</div>]]></description>

The early units placed the cooling device on top of a small boxy unit while today’s sleeker multi-door units place the cooling units unseen on the bottom. A fridge that just meets the new standards will use $215 to $270 less per year in electricity than a comparable unit that met the first state standards set in 1978. A 1986-era 18 c.f. fridge uses&nbsp;<strong>1400 kWh</strong>&nbsp;a year, while a modern energy-efficient model uses only&nbsp;<strong>350 kWh</strong>&nbsp;— a whopping 75% reduction. At 15¢ kWh, trading in a pre-1986 fridge for a new efficient one would save about $158 a year in electricity costs. And some older fridges are even worse than the average.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The fridge removes heat from the air inside the chamber and uses water to cool it. &nbsp;<br>The compressor constricts the refrigerant vapor, raising its pressure, and pushes it into the coils on the outside of the refrigerator.&nbsp;<br>When the hot gas in the coils meets the cooler air temperature of the kitchen, it becomes a liquid. Now in liquid form at high pressure, the refrigerant cools down as it flows into the coils inside the freezer and the fridge.&nbsp;<br>The refrigerant absorbs the heat inside the fridge, cooling down the air. Last, the refrigerant evaporates to a gas, then flows back to the compressor, where the cycle starts all over.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>&nbsp;Transportation of food added a great variety to the American diet, and that included greater choices for the poor.<br><br></div><div>• Food prices dropped due to availability, which resulted in improved nutrition for people of all classes.<br><br></div><div>• Mealtime options expanded beyond seasonal foods. Fresh food began to be available year-round.<br><br></div><div>• Small markets began to be edged out by supermarkets, which could offer food in larger quantities.<br><br></div><div>• Refrigerated cases in supermarkets meant you could buy pre-cut meat and no longer had to go to a butcher’s shop.<br><br></div><div>• There was less food waste because spoilage was under better control.<br><br></div><div>• Mealtime was more convenient for the cook, with less shopping necessary.<br><br></div>]]></description>
