Description: This story is about a young girl named Jazz, who is known worldwide for knowing she was transgender from an early age. This story discusses the challenges she has faced with being a transgender woman, and how she knew she was not in the right body from a very young age.

Explanation: Jazz's story depicts the life of someone who does not feel comfortable and confident in their own body. It shows all the difficulties she has had to face from knowing she was a girl, to even now, when receiving constant criticism. This story is about a lot of challenges many children do not have to face.

Description: Room is about a mother raising her son in a one bedroom shack, and they are unable to ever leave. This is because the mother was kidnapped by a man when she was only a young teenager. The story is told from Jack's point of view and he has no idea why they are stuck in the room, or when they can ever get out.

Explanation: Many people have no idea what it is like to be a woman. Looking out for yourself when you are just on a run, or walking around alone is something you fear, as you have no idea what may or may not happen to you. This story is about a young woman who was kidnapped and assaulted every single day for years. She was held captive in a small shack with no connection to the outside world. This is something we as women pray never happens to us, or anyone we know.

Description: This story follows the main character, Jeannette through her non traditional life, along with her three siblings. They basically raised themselves from a very young age, until adulthood. They had extremely dysfunctional parents who would rather use the little money they earned, towards their own interests instead of their children's needs. The children faced very difficult challenges throughout their entire childhood.

Explanation: This book is an example of something a great deal of children do not face. The main character, Jeannette was cooking her own hot dogs at age four; I do not think I knew how to cook anything until I was maybe 12 or 13 years old. The children in this book had a very difficult life, especially with how neglectful their parents were, and it is a perfect example of a transformative book.

Description: This book is about the time of slavery, and how difficult it was to be black woman. You had to do whatever your husband told you, and deal with the harsh criticisms from your boss. This story is depicted in the late 1960s, and follows black women working in white households. The majority of these white people were cruel and vicious to these women, just because of the color of their skin.

Explanation: This book represents how difficult it was for people of color back in the 1900s. I, personally cannot even imagine some of the things they had to go through. The story of these women shows how strong they each were to put up with everything they were faced with. It is something we do not know today.

He does not know where he is going, so he used nature to guide his way.

Explanation: This is a transformative book because it discusses race and slavery. This character was a young black boy, who was being chased by white men. He has to physically run for his life, away from these people in hopes to find a new and better existence.

Her father, who is a white lawyer, was hired to represent a black man who was false accused of raping a white woman.

Explanation: In this day and age we are still dealing with people false accusing others of rape. Although it is rare, it does still occur. I know for myself, I never had to worry about a white person representing me while I am not white, so I do not know how that feels, like the man did in this story during the 1930s.

The story is about the ending of slavery and how Ellen learns a new meaning of freedom.

Explanation: We do not have to know what it is like in this day and age, for our moms and dads to be denied the right to marriage. We also do not know the meaning of freedom, because we never experienced not having our own free will.

The Hunger Games Series, by Suzanne Collins

Description: The Hunger Game's series follows Katniss Everdeen through her journey of being an "outsider" to the Capitol. Katniss is a young woman who is living in district 12(the last district outside the capitol) with her sister, and mother. They are dirt poor, along with everyone else in their district. The only people with money live in the Capitol. Their district, along with the other 11 are forced to participate in the "reaping" for the televised Hunger Games. This is where the capitol forces each district to pick one male and one female to fight to the death on television. The point of this is too the capitol may keep the districts "in line". The story follows Katniss as she volunteers for her sister in the games, and through her journey as she fights to the death.

Explanation: This is a great example of a transformative text as it is incredibly different to what anyone in this world would know. This basically is sharing a story of a girl who's every move is controlled by the president of their country. This president forces the people who are not considered "rich" into participating in a televised series of killing each other, for his own entertainment.

The Divergent Series, by Veronica Roth

Description: Divergent is a trilogy that follows a young girl named Beatrice Prior, through her journey into becoming an adult. In order to be accepted into her "country", they must take a test that will tell them which faction they will be placed in. The factions consist of, abnegation, dauntless, amity, erudite, and cantor. Once you choose your faction, you can never look back or you are considered homeless. Beatrice grew up with her parents, and brother in abnegation, however once the tests were taken, Beatrice chose dauntless, and her brother chose erudite, leaving their parents back in abnegation. The series continues in sharing Beatrice's challenged not only with herself, but with the leaders of their "country" as well.

Explanation: This is a transformative book, as it has the idea that a person cannot be different from the rest. You are to be placed in one faction, and one faction only, or else you must be eliminated. This book shows how Beatrice struggled with being "different" from everyone around her, yet she was not allowed to talk about it with anyone.
This story makes you think of how different the lives of the characters are from your own life. These people have to pick up and leave everything they have ever known to make it in their new faction, and even then they still struggle immensely.
