One major contributor to the Harlem Renaissance was an artist named Archibald Motley. He was racially mixed, half African American and half European, and raised in a racially tolerant, but predominately white neighborhood. He struggled with his own racially identity as an adult, and felt as though he didn’t belong to either culture. Out of this struggle came his artwork, which focused on celebrating all shades of skin. Motley himself described his work as “a means of affirming racial respect and race pride.” His painting Nightlife (1923) depicts black nightclub goers having a great time. The piece isn’t supposed to be about race, it’s about enjoying life and community.
