An elementary teacher at John C. Coonley School designed an active learning lesson to help her students better understand their school's code of conduct: be responsible, be respectful, and be safe. After having a discussion on learning styles, students brainstormed specific examples on their SmartBoard for each rule. They then worked in groups to write rules and visually depict these specific examples for each part of the code of conduct. Next students got to use the app PicCollage on school iPads to take pictures that demonstrate their specific rule. Students in another class used Educreations to create a video presentation of their drawings and written rules.

This lesson is an example of an active learning experience because...
- it's student centered
- it emphasizes student voice through group discussion and small group work
- it gives students the opportunity to collaborate with their peers
- students come up with their own examples in groups and demonstrate their understanding through writing, drawing, and taking pictures

Here are a few suggestions I have to make the lesson more engaging:
- At the end of the lesson, have each group present what they created with PicCollage to reinforce the rules
- Find a time for students to share what they produced with other classrooms (Ms. Malhiot's class could share their PicCollage creations with the other 2nd grade class and get to see their Educreations presentation)
- Create opportunities for students to reflect on the 'why' behind the rules through group discussion, think/pair/share or a writing activity (ex. Be quiet in the hallway so other students who are learning don't get distracted)

- ACTING: Students can work in groups to act out what it looks like to follow and not follow specific rules
- CREATE GAMES: Students can collaborate in groups to create a matching card game by writing each rule on a card and creating separate cards with pictures to go along with the rules
- STORYTELLING: Students can write fictional stories centered around a rule of their choosing
