In the 1800s, Indian immigrants to Australia were primarily laborers accompanying British citizens, engaged in jobs such as hawkers and agricultural workers (Indian Culture - Indians in Australia, n.d.). However, strict immigration policies in the early 20th century limited Indian entry, except for British colonials (Indian Culture - Indians in Australia, n.d.). As these restrictions eased, a diverse influx of Indian professionals, including doctors, engineers, and tech experts, migrated, leading to the rapid growth of the Indian community in Australia, now among the top five migrant groups (Indian Culture - Indians in Australia, n.d.).

Three common concerns listed in the Australian Refugee Health Practice Guide which are likely to be present in people arriving from India are low vitamin D, Hepatitis B, and iron deficiency (Australian Refugee Health» Primary Care for People of Refugee Backgrounds, n.d.).

One treatment available to refugees from India who have a deficiency of vitamin D involves restoring their levels to a normal range. This can be achieved through either daily dosing or high-dose therapy. It is essential to ensure adequate calcium intake and provide advice about sun exposure and self-management, as outlined in the ASID/RHeaNA Low Vitamin D (Refugee Health Assessment» Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).

For refugees from India who have tested positive for hepatitis B, one protocol involves scheduling a clinical assessment, conducting necessary blood tests, and performing an abdominal ultrasound. Additionally, it's essential to ensure that non-immune household contacts and sexual partners are vaccinated. Testing for and vaccination against hepatitis A should also be considered, following the guidelines outlined in the ASID/RHeaNA Immunisation (Refugee Health Assessment» Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).

One treatment available to refugees from India who have iron deficiency is providing iron supplementation when their iron levels are below 15 µg/L (or below the reference range for children) or when clinical and haematological features indicate iron deficiency anaemia. Additionally, educating them about the importance of an iron-rich diet and advising against excessive dairy intake in children is part of the approach (Refugee Health Assessment» Australian Refugee Health, n.d.).

Indian Culture - Indians in Australia.
