Often those that act with or show power, will justify their action(s) due to their situation or morals; however, a unbalance of power can influence their judgement of their actions.

The main character that shows this theme is Prospero with both Caliban and Ariel. After "[violating] / The honor my child," Prospero's actions towards Caliban by making

him a slave, made him treat Caliban unfair (Shakespeare 1.2.417,418). Despite the debate of whether his actions are just or not based off Caliban's actions, his jugement changed

his treatment towards him. Morever, this was more particularly shown with Ariel; after saving him from Sycorax, making Ariel a slave was reasonable. But, as shown in Act 1 Scene 1 and 2,

Prospero "abused" or unfairly used Ariel's power to his gain.

Despite knowledge giving people power in certain situations, it can also be used to benefit others and

one's own perspectives on the situation.

One example of this found in The Tempest is the character Gonzalo. During the first scene in Act 1, he reasonably

speaks based off the situation; during the tempest, he notes that the boatswain is the one with the most power or

knowledge to save them from the storm. Thus he speaks in a patient and humble manner. He states that "I have

great comfort from this fellow. Methinks / he hath no drowning mark upon him" (Shakespeare 1.1.29,30). His

knowledge did not only contribute to his perspective, but made him tell others on the boat to listen to the boatswain

because of the importance of his knowledge.
