Her condition progressively got worse, leading to her death two weeks after giving birth.

A moment in Adeline's life is when she wins the playwriting competition. During the summer, she is not allowed to leave the school, spending most of her time in the library. She comes across a flyer for a playwriting competition in English. It takes her a few weeks before she turns the project in. A few months go by, and she forgets about the playwriting. Her father comes across the competition when he is in an elevator with a worker. They show him the newspaper, and later that day, he is driving Adeline from school to the house. He tells her that she can have whatever she wants. Her response is to attend college in England, like her brothers. He tells her she is allowed to do that, asking her what she wants to do. When she says she wants to be a writer, he tells her no and that she will be going to school to become a doctor. She agrees happily, willing to do anything as long as she gets to go to college in England.
