Stress and its effect on the body...

Stress is a reaction which is mostly caused by being overwhelmed. It can be seen as a way to "cope" with frustrating and challenging situations. Stress can be helpful when it comes to dangerous situations (adrenaline kicks in) but can be negative when trying to focus, relax, sleep etc. Stress can effect your body by tightening your muscles, raising your blood pressure, quickening your breath and sharpening your senses... those are some of the more "positive" effects. The more negative effects include headaches, body pains, a weakened immune system and insomnia.

Journaling is a helpful way to "hash" out your problems. You can see the problem on paper and work it out there. It allows you to process and understand the root of a stress inducing problem. A 2011 study (click here for more info) tested the positive impact journaling had on teens who struggled with stress and self-doubt before test taking. Ninth graders were assigned to two groups. One group was instructed to write about and express their anxiety and feelings dealing with the exam for 10 minutes before to the start of the exam, while the other group of students were told to write about which questions they thought would be on the exam for 10 minutes prior to taking the exam. The study found that those who wrote about their feelings in their journal performed much better than the control group who only wrote about test content. This turned out to be especially true for the students who identified themselves to be anxious or suffering from test anxiety. The teens who wrote about their feelings were also less fidgety and a lot calmer.

Early "diaries" or journals were kept as public records. They really originated in Italy, they soon went from records of public life to reflections on private life... much like the idea of journaling today.

Journaling should be practiced in a quiet area with little to no distractions. This way you can really focus on your feelings and fixing the stress inducing problem. There is a lot you can do with journaling to make it fun or more helpful. As long as you are writing about your feelings and thoughts... you are journaling.
