S symbol of historical greatness whereas others believe that it is actually just a symbol of ‘losers’. People think th BLM movement start this, so if black lives matter why are we honouring people who didnt believe this others think its a prt of their community so they do not want to change it and don’t see the relation to slavery. Its an argument of ignorance and honesty. The statues are slave owners and that’s not something that needs to be glorified. If the statues come down people are worried about the public response.

In crowds people leave the fear of being touched, becomes the opposite, no longer notice who is pressing themselves against you, you loose the fear of touch whereas by yourself if someone was to touch you the same way you would see it is as inappropriate.

How covid has changed this text:

The world has become the opposite and we fear crowds and large groups of people more. Instead of the belief that “only in a crowd one can become free” we are more aware of who is around us and who is touching us and we instead feel consumed by this crowd as we’ve been told that we need our space. Not being around crowds for months and even years on ends redefines the purpose and exhilaration that comes with it, its viewed more like a punishment and instead of “fear changing to its opposite” it is what the new meaning of fear is. A simple touch of the shoulder is cause for a panic whereas Elias says “he no longer notices who it is that presses against him” we are now more alert and aware of all the people surrounding us and how what they do impacts us.

In 2019, the government rejected the definition of Islamophobia. Which was defined in the Oxford dictionary as “Intense dislike or fear of Islam, especially as a political force”. In 2019 a group of MPs published their own definition of Islamophobia. They defined Islamophobia as being a “type of racism that targets expressions of Muslimness or perceived Muslimness”. A working definition may help in differentiating hate speech from freedom of expression.

The definitions of Islamophobia are somewhat confusing, there is not one working definition that is relied upon universally.

Islamophobia is an issue that is still very much prevalent in today’s society. In 2015, Islamophobia increased by 200% in the UK, while Anti-Muslim attacks in the US grew by 78%. It is not only Muslims that are victims of Islamophobia, a diverse range of different ethnic and religious minorities are also subjected to Islamophobia as a result of the assumption being made that they are Muslim.

Islamophobia is strongly linked to political events that take place around the world. Events such as 9/11, the 2005 London bombing, the more recent terror attacks in London, such as in Borough Market. Statistics show that experiences of Islamophobia increase after these events. Additionally, the mainstream medias portrayal of these events add to the negative stereotype of Muslims.

Islamophobia takes place in many different forms, on many different platforms. More recently, there has been an incline in Islamophobia taking place on social media. It raises the question as to whether hate speech is policed actively enough to ensure that there is a clear distinction between free speech and hate speech.

Government institution and key members of government can reinforce, promote and reproduce islamophobia through their statements and initiatives.

Social media outlets, such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter have developed systems that allow them to filter and tackle general hate speech within a timely manner. This allows them to filter content based on whether or not it is hateful. Having said this, detecting Islamophobic hate speech is a challenge not only for social media outlets, but also for governments and academics.

Having said this, Islamophobia is still very much a prevalent issue.

Experts are now calling for a distinction between freedom of expression and hate speech against all religions, including Islam, and for laws that criminalise anti Islamism.

Western Muslim women are often presented either as passive victims of male power imposed upon them, or as strong feminists who oppose this power by fighting it from a disadvantaged position. Media sometimes criticizes Islam for marginalizing women and for providing a disproportionate amount of power to men [3]. Acceptance of Islam is equated with women giving up equality and women’s rights are represented as being incompatible with freedom of religion [4]. As a result of these portrayals, the most common words used to describe Muslim women by journalists and politicians are ‘segregated’, ‘beaten’, ‘insults’, ‘veil’, ‘freedom’, ‘religion’, ‘hatred’, ‘human rights’ and ‘extremism’ [5]. In crime dramas such as CSI or Criminal Minds, Muslim women are almost always represented as victims of male domestic violence; women’s appearances in police films or television shows are often cut short by a male who asserts that he is in charge
