My grandmother had eight children despite her living in poverty in Mexico. My grandmother was part of the lower class but this did not stop her from continuing to expand her family. My grandmother’s decision to continue to expand her family goes against what Angela Davis was saying in “ Racism, Birth Control, and Reproductive Rights.” Davis mentions how there's a “duty for the poor” to not have children if they are immigrants, poor or black. In this article, these women are being discriminated against if they fit into one of three categories mentioned, but if they do not then they are free to have as many children as they want. Stop having kids to reduce the population was their moral obligation and my grandmother falls into two of these categories. My grandmother contradicts what Angela Davis is recalling from the late 1900s relating to women and birth control.

Byron Hurt recalls that his father’s physique and gender allowed him to intimidate Hurt’s mother. His father weaponized this and he dominated his household and this behavior reflected onto Hurt himself. Unlike Hurt who changed, this behavior and way of thinking has continued to expand among some of the males in my family. They continue this cycle, trying to dominate the women in their lives. They believe that because they are men that they have a right and the power to have control over the women in their lives.

I was first called the B- word in middle school and then soon enough more hurtful words would come. Then I was being called a lesbian because I did not act like a girl or dress like one. To this day, I still get called names and the majority of the time the person behind these words is a male. I learned to live with these words and accept that they are never going away because just like Suzanne Pharr states society has normalized hate on women. Pharr argues that men do it because they can and to assert control once again and from personal experience I agree. This is why being a girl is hard because the world is built against women.

This is my older sister Diana and unlike the older women in my family she speaks up. Diana is not one to keep quiet, instead she will speak her mind regardless of who it is. She breaks the toxic machismo values in my family and is representing girl power! (Diana is the blond one and I’m the one with the black hair)

My mom has experienced many different types of racism. The three most popular are because she is a women, immigrant and a Mexican. She has been a victim of being called negative connotations intended to put her in her place or out her down. She has gotten harassed by a male or whistled just because these men believe they can. My mother has many stories to tell and unfortunately the stories will only continue to grow.
