In this part of the book elizer was moved from the first concentration camp to the new one. He was used to the dehumanizing treatment already working every day for a small ration of soup and bread. At one point a rebell was hung for a crime. this did not bother elizer if anything it made him thankful for still being alive. Later on another younger smaller one was caugth and hung. It took him forever to die and made elizer realize that could be him and it ruined his appetite. This mix of emotion made him question his god becuase of how cruel he was being to them.

Sadness "The darkness enveloped us. All I could hear was the violin, and it was as if Juliek's soul had become his bow. He was playing his life. His whole being was gliding over the strings. His unfulfilled hopes. His charred past, his extinguished future. He played that which he would never play again." (page 95)
