Text Evidence Review and Reflection by Julie Reuter

Welcome to our text evidence reflection and review of text evidence expectations. The reading standard for text evidence (R.L6.1) expects students to be able to cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as draw inferences from the text. We have practiced text evidence and demonstrated understanding on a few assessments. Let's review where we have been and what we can do to grow this skill. Please reflect on the following (you may use all your resources to help you craft your responses):
1. What is text evidence?
2. Take a look at your previous assessments. How did you do? What can you do on Friday’s assessment to
demonstrate your new understanding?
3. What tools can you use to practice/review for the assessment?

What strategies should you use when completing a text evidence assessment.

Text evidence is when you take evidence from a piece of writing, saying “this is what happened in the story.” Text evidence is when you are writing about a story and then take evidence so that people know what just went on in your story or what your story is about. Text evidence is used to show your thinking and support you thinking as well.

I didn’t do very well on my previous assessments because I didn’t take the time to re-read through the piece, I just read the question(s) and then looked for the answer without even reading through the text to show evidence. What I can do on Friday is read the text, see what the questions are, then re-read through the story, make sure my answer is reasonable, and then annotate the text I just read.

I can take and show evidence from the book I am reading and then show my parents, see what they think about it, and then do the same thing for the assessment tomorrow. Some strategies I could use is read the text, read the questions, re-read and find an answer to the question(s), and then make sure that my answers are reasonable and reliable. If they aren’t then I will make changes to my answer and see if they are reasonable and reliable enough by using specific quotes if forgotten.

Text Evidence is proof, and facts that is shown in any book. So you would have to have an explanation for proof . That also includes the setting,. For example: “I think rocks are related to soil because in this book it said ‘ Soil is made of humus, and weathered rocks’ I found that on page 25”. It helps the audience understand the book. In reading we have recently finished our Text Evidence Assessment. We did “Henry’s Freedom Box” followed by Weslandia.” I did pretty well on the assessment. But there was also some mistakes, and also silly mistakes. But there was also a lot of stuff that were well too. I gave some detail, and I also explained why the character chose to do what they did.I think I could work more hard on it, and focus more. Some tools for next time is to look over the questions more, that also includes when you’re done to check it over. You could also practice more. For instance, when you read, you could come up with text evidence, and figure out why the character did that. It will also be good for your reading logs as a jot.

Text evidence is something that you pull from the text you are reading. It’s evidence from the text that supports a claim or statement. Text evidence is reliable evidence with direct facts from the text.

I think that I have done my previous text assessments very well. On Friday’s text assessment, I will use my prior knowledge of text assessments to include everything required. I will also read the full story and if there are any parts I miss, or do not understand, I will re-read. To make sure my assessment goes well on Friday, I will make sure to have supportive text evidence for each claim or statement. I will do this by taking solid parts of the text and using them to my advantage.

There are many tools I can use for practicing and reviewing for the text assessment. I can use previous text assessments to look at their rubrics. I can use my text evidence sheet and bookmark to find ways to communicate text evidence. I can also use the -*Strong Readers CITE evidence from the text to support their thinking*- poster in Mrs. Reuter’s classroom as well.

There is a vast variety of strategies available for use on the text assessment on Friday. One of my strategies is using direct quotes or words straight from the text. I do that because if someone is reading my assessment, they can look for that exact phrase or quote and know it’s legit. Another strategy I use is to re-read all of my evidence after writing it. I do this to make sure that the evidence is reasonable and comparable to the text. That way it can clearly communicate what I am stating. I will try my best on the text assessment on Friday and hopefully do a good job. Good luck everyone! :)

On my previous assessments I did things and some details in and supported my answer with evidence but on Friday I would like to even do better and support my answer with more evidence and quotes. I think on Friday I can do better and show my understanding by making sure I use quotes and support my answer clearly and carefully by taking my time and rereading what I wrote. On Friday I will use many tools to help me support my answers. First of all, I will use the actual story to help me because you have to read the story to be able to pull evidence from it. Second, I will use my text evidence sentence starter sheet to use good sentence starters. And I will also use my Henry's freedom box assessment and my Weslandia
assessment.

Text evidence is taking specific evidence from a story that will help back up your ideas also like annotating. Someways you can use it when you answering questions from a book and you need evidence.

On my previous assessment I did pretty good. My strengths for that test was that I can support my ideas with details from different part of the text.I can find text through out the story and not just in one spot. What I need to work for the next assessment is to find specific quotes that supports my ideas instead of getting part of the story that somewhat or don’t go along with my idea. I just need to find text that help support my ideas and not against or for another idea.

To make sure that I get a good grade on my next assessment I will study off my DIY bookmark and to review the examples that Mrs. Reuter handed out to us. I will focus a lot on the strategies that I got wrong last time like text that has to relate to my ideas. If I do good with studying I have no doubt that I will do good on my assessment this Friday.

All text evidence should have something to support your point. This can be done by citing the page number at the end of your statement. Also add facts, examples, and quotes. On the previous assessments, I did pretty well there were a couple things that I did well on they include selecting good ideas/statements for the text and supported most of my ideas with several different parts of the text. There are also some things that I could work on they include adding more details to support my ideas and adding more details and quotes. There are a couple tools that I can use to help me practice those things for the upcoming assessment they are my Text Evidence Techniques bookmark, the example text evidence assessment, and reading text evidence prompts and text evidence phrases.

What is text evidence, text evidence is specific text from a story that is supporting your answer to the question. It is supporting your thinking by giving details. Also, it has to be quoted word for word. With previous text evidence assessments, I have had good and bad flaws. Some good flaws are for when I need to explain something to somebody I can do that. I do this by giving people the key information and not giving them useless information. But I do not do so good when I have to quote information or copy it from a text. I don’t do so good at this because I want to put it in my own words. I could improve upon this by looking over previous test that I did good on and I can study them. Also, I don’t do good with sticking with my thinking, I like to talk about things that don’t even relate to my thinking. I can improve this by Circling specific parts so I can focus on specific details.

Some tools I can use to study for tomorrow's test are my previous test and I can use my DIY bookmark to study.

Some strategies I could use is the first time I’ll just read over the story.

Text evidence is evidence from a text that readers can pull from the text they’re reading to understand the character's traits, what they look like, what they do, or why something is a good idea or not. An example of text evidence is if the author said, “Ryan is wearing black sweatpants, and a red Nike shirt, he also has brown hair, blue eyes, and a broken nose.”

On my last text evidence assessment some positives where, I did what I was told to do, I didn’t make many mistakes, and I got the answers right. But 1 negative I had was I forgot to add some specific quotes and I got a worse grade that I wanted. So next time I take a text evidence assessment I will add specific quotes from the text to get a grade I want. I will also take my time to be sure I didn’t miss anything and get the best grade I can.

The tools that I will use to practice for the test are all of my previous tests because I will look them over to see what I can improve on. I will also use my resources that I have and I will look for what good readers look for when finding text evidence. During the test I will read it over then re-read what I have read already and annotate it to find the traits the character has, what he does, what he looks like, and where he lives, I will also look for what he does for fun and for a living if he has a job.

Text Evidence-Textual evidence is evidence from any genre text that you can use to illustrate your arguments. All evidence should: support your specific point. Do it by, saying page and exact words in quotations. On my previous text evidence assessment, I did pretty well! I think I can do better at exact word evidence. To be honest I got lazy and did not fully write out the evidence. I need to do that to get a better score!

Text evidence is from a type of text (fiction or nonfiction) that you use to support your ideas and arguments. All text evidence should support a specific topic, which should also include a page number. For example, “He looked for his dog desperately,” pg. 4, this is why I think he really wants his dog back. Text evidence should also have a quote from the book or story that goes along with a persuasive argument. On my previous text evidence assessment, Henry’s Freedom Box, I feel I did good on answering the questions with quotes from the book and evidence supporting them. Something I think I could work on is adding more quotes to my piece and not just one to support a bunch of evidence because sometimes I do that. For Friday’s Assessment, I think I can demonstrate that I can have good quotes and good evidence and I will shoot for a 4. Shooting for a 4 means I have to make sure I have enough quotes for all my evidence and that I can evaluate my evidence for which is the strongest. Some tools I can review for the text are my text evidence bookmark. I can use this because it has the rubric, the definition of text evidence, and text evidence starters on there for me to look at and remember to use. Another tool I can use is the Weslandia grade example. I can use this to help me understand what a grade 3 and 4 look like. Also, I can use it because if I want to receive a 3 or 4 it helps me to make sure my work is proficient enough to get one of those grades.

Text Evidence is evidence from a text that you use to answer questions about. However you use the evidence when asking questions from the text. All questions that you answer from the text should include a specific point. That can be done by citing a specific source or listing the page number when you do answer the question. An example is : Beans loves babies, for instance, on page 73 he called his gang the diaper gang. That is basically what text evidence means. On my previous assessment “Henry’s Freedom Box” I think I did pretty well but definitely could do better. I did pretty well on the first question which held my grade together! I supported it with different parts of evidence throughout the piece, not just one piece of evidence that doesn’t really explain your answer. However on the last question I really only used on quote from the text. That is what made my grade crumble. However, over all I did pretty well, and I am proud of myself because it was also only the first assessment! The note that was left on my paper was, “Great answers and ideas- it’s very important to support them with specific quotes” That just means I have to back my answers up with more quotes straight from the text! The tools I will use on my assessment are: My Henry’s Freedom Box assessment, my Weslandia assessment,, and the expectations of Henry’s Freedom Box to get a 3,4,3.5, and more. Those will help me because knowing what I did wrong last time can always make you do better this time. Also it would help to have a good example to know how to cite your sources! The strategies I would of course use is citing my source! I think I will be ready for our assessment!

Text Evidence is using evidence straight from the text, to support your ideas and/or arguments. You can add text evidence by using phrases like “On page ___, it said…” or “According to the text...” This way, you can specifically support your evidence, with the given idea. On my previous assessment, “Henry's Freedom Box”, I did some things well, but I can continue working on some areas. One thing I found I did well, was giving exact text evidence. I used lots of text evidence for each question. I want to work on not putting my opinion in the Text Evidence area. As I was reading through my answers, I noticed my opinion a little bit. Next time, I’ll save that part for the answer box. It’s not always good to mix your opinion into the text evidence because then it’s not exact evidence. On Friday’s assessment, I will re-read my answers over, and take out all opinions. When completing this Text Evidence Assessment, I will get a good sleep, a proper breakfast, and I will review my bookmark, and use my studying on the test. Additionally, when I read my independent book tonight, I will ask questions and find important details, to practice for Fly Away Home. My goal is to receive a 4, by using what I’ve learned about text evidence. This goal is measurable for me, based on my last assessment score. I will try my hardest on this test!

Text evidence is textual evidence from a text (fiction or nonfiction) that you can use to illustrate your ideas and support your argument. All textual evidence should: support a specific point.

Looking at my previous assessment I did pretty well. My strongest point is independently supporting my ideas and claims with specific details (quotes) and evaluating evidence to see which is strongest to support my claim. However, I think I could be a little better at organizing my ideas so I don’t have huge jumbles of words and quotes and claims. On Friday's assessment, I want to make sure I do things in a certain, order here it is. Number one, I’m going read the questions that way I can look for parts of the story. Number two, I’m going to read the story. Number three, I’m going to read the questions again and reread the story while annotating. Finally, I’m going to answer the questions using specific detail. I think some tools I could defiantly use are my text evidence bookmark (reviewing it ). Also, my Henry's freedom box and the exemplary will prove most useful for me to review them and look at what I/they did and then go from there for my assessment. Finally, I can use my Weslandia assessment to look at what I most definitely should not do because in that one I lacked all the basic skills and did not understand what to do. Finally, some strategies I could use on tomorrow's assessment would be is to read the questions first (so I don’t miss a thing). Also using very precise annotations and being absolutely sure that I find the perfect quote based on the question.

I believe that's all. Thank you for reading this and wish me luck on my assessment.

All text evidence should support a specific point, and this can be done by stating the text and page number at the end of your sentence or paragraph. I independently supported my ideas with specific details from several parts of the story. I selected these because they strongly match my point. Even though I’m very proud of my score, I’ve learned a lot since the assessment. On the next test, I’ll evaluate the text more and find which evidence is the strongest, and why that piece of evidence that I chose is, in fact, the strongest, and also why I chose that as the strongest point of textual evidence.

3> The tools that I can use on my next assessment are the posters set up around the room, the rubric, and studying.

Text evidence is something you can use to support your claim using text from the story that the question is about such as using setting, character traits, or other characters to support your claim. In my assessments on using text evidence to support claims something bad that I did is, I forgot to include major parts of the story to support my claim like setting and character traits which made my claim seem less effective to make people believe it. I did good overall in getting the claim correct or not going on opinion using sentences like, “on page 3-4” and “at the end of the book”. I also did good in creating ideas for what I can use to support my claim allowing me to make many kinds of people believe my claim. On Friday’s assessment, I want to add the things I missed like setting, character traits, and other characters and put them effectively into my writing. There are some tools that I should practice.

1. I should practice how I read the story so that I don’t pass over the important things that I should use in my claim.

2. I should practice how I write my evidence because the way that I do it sounds unprofessional for example, I use sentences like, “yes because everyone at school tormented him.” or like “Curious because the students become part of waslandia.”

3. I lastly want to fix what I put into my claim and what I leave out. Because some of the things that I put into my claim are not very effective

What is text evidence?

Text evidence is where you find evidence from the text and you can use it in tests. When there is a question to find text evidence about a certain part, there usually is 3+ text evidence sentences. You can also use it to support your argument whether it’s fiction or nonfiction. An example of text evidence is, “One page ___ it said ___, or you can put, during this part of the story____, Henry said_____” On my previous test, I think that I did pretty well. Something that I can work on is adding more text evidence, I also need to clarify my answers because I usually say things in general. For example, I said “To cross the oceans” I wasn’t clear on the ocean that they were crossing. I am sure that if I can fix these things if I do I will improve. I can also add my thoughts and more details, this will also help me achieve my goal.

What tools can you use to practice/review for the assessment?

What is text evidence? Text evidence is evidence from a text that you can use to support arguments. Text evidence should always be cited with a page number, sentence number, or something like that. You can cite text evidence by putting quotations around the sentence, and you should cite your evidence at the end of the sentence.

After looking at my previous assessments, I did great and had very strong evidence on my Henry’s freedom box assessment. But on my Weslandia assessment, I also did great, but I don't think that I really had enough quotes from the story added in, and am planning to add more quotes when the next assessment comes. I will do this by paying attention to the story even more than I regularly do to find quotes that I could put in my essay, I will know that I’ve done this by when the next text evidence assessment comes.

To get a better score on my assessment than ever, I can practice, or review the example assessments to see what I can get to get a 3 or maybe even a 4. Some strategies that I can use in my text evidence assessment could be to analyze the posters around the room that are involved with text evidence. I can also use my past assessments to see what I’ve done, what I could do better compared to my last assessment, and what I did good, so I can try that again.

I hope that doing all of these things improves my grade on my next assessment!

To answer the question of “What is text evidence?” I would say it’s basically what it’s name is... evidence in the text. Text evidence is where the author doesn’t state the character’s traits, they show ways that the character is that trait, for example, she sang so beautifully, the moon and stars were out-shined. This would prove that she was a good singer. Text evidence can also show what characters are feeling by what they do.. For example, Emmerson was walking up to the haunted house. She shivered and turned pale. I know that Emmerson was scared because she was acting like she was scared and her surroundings were what most people think is scary so she is scared. Text evidence can also be used on tests. People who take the tests have to figure out the traits of characters and use evidence to do so.

I did a good job on previous tests, which means I put in lots of detail and I made sure it was reasonable. I want to put in lots of detail in again so that I can try to push past my average and break through to a new level. I also want to make sure it’s reasonable in a way that everyone can understand and there is no confusion between Mrs. Reuter and I.

I will use tools such as my Henry’s Freedom Box Text Evidence Assessment and my Weslandia Text Evidence Assessment and say, “What can I do better in these sections and what can I use to have my test better?” I can also study and have good enthusiasm for the test.

For my Text Evidence Assessment, I have some things I want to fix, add, rewrite, revise. I will do that by revising what text evidence means, looking at my previous assessments, and what tools can I use?

First of all, I have to revise what text evidence means, just in case if I forgot a few details. Text evidence is where you read a book (Nonfiction or fiction) and you find evidence in that book to support your argument. You find examples in the story to help find ideas to make your argument is even stronger. When you use text evidence, you have to cite the source in order to have a complete evident. For example, you can say, “On page ____, it said___.” Or, “According to the text….”. Text evidence is very important, or else your argument won’t come to life.

Next, is my opinion on my previous text evidence assessments. I feel like I did pretty good on the text evidence assessment to the book, “Henry’s Freedom Box”. The part that I am most proud of is citing text evidence. I feel like I gave every text evidence there was for the first argument. But I feel like I lost it towards the end. My goal is to keep the vibe throughout the whole assessment. Some stuff that would be included would be multiple text evidence quotes, the reasons why I picked that quote, and why it is very important. Plus, I want to pick off every single little detail from the quotes to make the argument extremely supportive. On Friday, I will pick out every little detail and make it into a strong argument.

Last but not least, these are some tools I will use to help me study. I would say the number one tool that will help me alot is the DIY text evidence bookmark. That way I can get a quick understanding of how it should be. I will also study the 4 examples of the text evidence for the book, “Weslandia,” by Paul Fleischman. That way I can see a 4 example, and I can follow that format. Finally I will look at my text evidence assessment of the books called, “Henry’s Freedom Box,” and “Weslandia”. I will study that so then I can see what I can improve on, and the things that I should keep on doing to help me get a better grade.

I know I will do good on my text evidence assessment this Friday because I know what text evidence means, I looked at my previous text evidence assessments, and I studied my tools.

I can use Henry’s Freedom Box assessment to look at my faults and try to fix them. Something I could use is the 4 example of Weslandia to see a good piece of work. Some strategies are I will read the story first then look at the questions then I will annotate the text for text evidence and finally I will focus on my test.

My goals for my personal narrative is to improve my punctuation, my transitions, and descriptions and elaborations. First, I will practice those 3 things and ask for help If I do not get it. If my teacher says that I got a good grade or says I am already good at what I needed to do. To get it, I will practice every day ,see tips on doing it, and I will work hard. This stuff is important to me because I can get better grades. My goal to finish what I do not get in time and try to learn it as fast as possible.

“Textual evidence is evidence from a text (fiction or nonfiction) that you can use to illustrate your ideas and support your arguments.

Text evidence is analysis of what the text says, as well as inferences. On previous text evidence assessments, I have done well. The thing specifically I did well was that I, concluded each evidence section by restating my position. To demonstrate my understanding I will, conclude my thought/point after each section, I will also, re-read the questions and my answers. I will also, cite the paragraph or part where I am getting my answer and thought process from. To review/practice for the assessment, I will look over my last assessment that I did and I will also, look over my bookmark that I made to help me with the assessment. I feel confident about my assessment and I am excited about it!

Text evidence is evidence from the text of a book or a story, or something that you can read that supports an idea from that story. You can use it to backup an essay or argument. Let’s say you are writing an essay, in your thesis statement you could use text evidence to prove your point. Text evidence is crucial for backing up arguments. Also text evidence can be used to help you understand what is happening in a book or a magazine.

After looking at my other assessments I have noticed that I have sometimes forgotten to use text evidence at the appropriate time. I think that I will achieve my goals and get a higher grade by remembering to use text evidence more often and when it is appropriate.

Another way I could achieve my goals and to get a higher grade is to take notes when I am supposed to, and with those annotations I will use the new notes combined with my old ones to achiveve my goals and get higher grades in writing.
