Jay Gould was born in Roxbury, New York on May 27, 1836. He was not always considered a Robber Baron, he was born into a poverty stricken family. Jay worked very hard to become a stockbroker. He soon knew the in and outs of the stock market but became deceitful in his ways, by rigging stocks for his own financial benefit, making a fortune. Jay was also the victor of the Erie Railroad Wars, giving him full control over the Erie Railroads. The railroads would bring him much more fortune and riches. He was a very deceitful man who gained almost all of his large fortune illegally, although he never got in trouble because he was very good at covering his tracks and bribing legislatures to keep his bonds 'legal'. Gould died on December 2, 1892 in Manhattan. Jay Gould was one of the most renowned Robber Barons of his time and giving him the name was a very fair assessment.

Jay Gould did however donate funds to multiple charities and businesses such as the Presbyterian Church, New York University, the University of the City of New York, Mount Vernon, and substantially to the victims of the great Chicago fire of 1871. These are just the known donations that Gould made during is life, he was a very secretive man and could have definitely made more that we are not aware of. We do know that a majority of his wealth stayed within his family.
