Despite the increasing number of non-governmental organizations that endeavor towards social welfare goals, social globalization is primarily a negative concept due to the fluctuation in population growth which evidently diminishes the adequate quantity for necessities, accelerating the likelihood of impoverishment. NGOs, or more formally known as non-governmental organizations, are transnational volunteer organizations that address social issues and are often represented at the United Nations. Non-governmental organizations everywhere devote enormous amounts of time and effort to preserve social equality and promote peace. For example, an American educator named Elise Boulding widely promotes NGOs. She said that educating people can push them to consider problems on a global spectrum. In the words of Elise Boulding, all NGOs are expected to “define problems in global terms, to take account of human interests and needs as they are found in all parts of the planet" (Mcgraw Hill pg 9). In the span of 90 years, the number of international NGOs increased from 176 to nearly 37,000, which in turn benefits the concept of social globalization because these groups address growing problems and present solutions to fix or regulate them. The intentions of NGOs are phenomenal and would be extremely beneficial to global social problems, however, NGOs lack the capability to manage the inconsistency of the global population and the problems it brings. In developing countries, the population is increasing exponentially while in developed countries, the population is decreasing. As explained in the McGraw-Hill textbook, “Developing countries face different problems. Between 2010 and 2050, the population in developing countries is expected to grow from 6.8 billion to 8.1 billion. Also, the trend of increased urbanization is expected to continue. Because many cities lack the infrastructure to support larger populations, concerns are rising about future international health and environmental problems, especially in developing nations” (pg 7). The population is a problem that no matter the country’s economic state, will suffer various trends. Due to the overwhelming increase in population within developing countries, it is difficult for cities to keep up with the population growth, resulting in an unstable infrastructure. If the infrastructure is having difficulties keeping up with the population, limited quantities of homes cause prices to rise rapidly. Limited quantities mean for the cost of living is affordable for many, evidently leading to increases in homelessness. Excessive prices are a contributing factor to thousands of citizens being hungry, becoming a global issue for all. This issue is not designated to one particular region, either. This growing problem of hunger threatens over 795 million people worldwide. This issue is caused by a multitude of reasons that affect a developing nation just as much as hunger itself. For example, in 2015, the civil war in South Sudan led to property destruction, which included many of the food providers in the country. Even worse, internal conflict had affected the ability to trade and import food from elsewhere, leaving South Sudan with few options. This war led to around 2.5 million people suffering with little or no food. Another reason for world hunger comes from the poverty levels that exist in developing nations alongside economic factors. Food prices are increased to help support the flow of money going to the country’s economy, leading to many citizens not being able to afford the food required. Nevertheless, social globalization can be categorized predominantly as a negative concept for population trends that boost poverty from lack of insufficient funds for all, a problem even non-governmental organizations are unable to keep up with these social problems.
