The Job: Being a bank teller is no easy task. One must first ask themselves if they can handle the pressure before applying for the job.

Steps in Preparation:
1. Familiarizing Yourself with the Cash: It is important to know how the money system works. Here in the U.S. we have $1, $2, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100. You should also be able to identify what each of the bills look like, what face should be on the front of each, and what building should be on the back of each.
2. Know How to Give Cash Back in Large Bills: This means to give the cash from largest to smallest. For example, if someone is cashing a check for $1,225, you should give them 12 $100s, 1 $20, and 1 $5. This is the least amount of bills you can give them for that amount.
3. Know The Importance of Money: Understand that money is very important to people and they do not want things to go wrong. By having this understanding, you will be able to be extra careful.

The Responsibility: People are most protective of three things in this world: their relationships, their children, and their MONEY. So as a bank teller, it is your job to make sure that every transaction goes smoothly to keep the customer happy. Things can go wrong and there are big consequences. For example, if you deposit someone's cash into another person's account, most people do not have much patience with that and get very upset. It can also cost you your job.

Below is an image of the different U.S. dollar bills.

"United States dollar" Wikipedia Page

As a teller, you become the face of the bank. You are the first face that people see when they walk inside. This means that it is extremely important to follow specific guidelines so that you represent the bank in a positive way. In an article titled, "25 Awesome Customer

Service Tips That You Must Employ" by Sam Suthar, it says,

"Providing good quality customer experience and support is as important and pivotal as offering top grade product or service to your consumers" These guidelines are: Greeting the customer with a smile and a friendly hello, dressing for success, and tone of voice when helping the customer.

Suthar, Sam. “25 Awesome Customer Service Tips That Must Employ [Updated].” Acquire, Acquire, 30 Aug. 2018,

Smile: The best way to make a customer feel welcome, is to greet them with a smile. This will show that you care about your job and the tasks that you are about to help the customer with. Smiling in general helps build bonds between people without having to speak any words. The power of a smile

Saying Hello: An inviting smile should be attached to a nice hello. It should be natural and real, and not look forced or uncomfortable. You want to make the customer feel comfortable with you. You are about to handle their money, so you want them to be able to trust you. An example of a good greeting is, "Hello, how are you doing today?" and then once they seem ready to be helped, you can say, "What can I help you with today?" This invites them to share their issues that they need your help to resolve. By inviting them to do so, they do not feel like a burden on you because it shows that you want to help them.

"Customer Service Psychology 101 – 6 Powerful Principles" by Nichole Elizabeth DeMeré, 2017

What to Wear: For customers to see you as a professional, you must dress like one. It is important to wear nice work pants with a blouse or sweater. You can also wear a nice skirt or dress. It is typically a rule that an employee at a bank must have natural colored hair and no facial piercings. This goes along with the belief that if someone looks well put together, they are easier to trust.

Dressing Modestly: Dressing in a modest way is very important as well. In an article from CNN by Beth Braccio Hering, titled, "10 commandments of dressing for work," it suggests that it is easier for others to see your hard work when you are dressed modestly. It says, "Get noticed for your great work, not your tight pants, overdone makeup, short skirt or cleavage-revealing shirt" (Hering). This statement is a good to remember. It is harder for people to see all of your great accomplishments if they are distracted by other things.

Hering, Beth Braccio. “10 Commandments of Dressing for Work.” CNN, Cable News Network, 20 Sept. 2011,

"5 Proven Strategies To Dress For Success" by Daren Little, 2018

Merchants Bank:
Merchants Bank is the local bank that I work at. Our goal is to make our customers feel at home. We want them to know and feel like they can trust us with all of their financial needs. My job as a teller may be a small job in comparison to the others at the bank, but it is very important to the bank as a whole. I, and the other tellers at my branch, are the ones that our customers see the most when stopping in. It is important that we build bonds with them so they will want to continue banking with us.
Below is an image from Merchants Bank's website and it shows some of the values that our bank has.

“Careers.” Merchants Investment Services,
https://www.merchantsbank.com/about/careers

Sounding Positive: It is always a good to make sure that your tone of voice sounds happy and upbeat while talking to your customers. We have all been waited on by an employee that has one range of tone and is quite. This portrays that the employee does not care about their job and that they do not want to help you. This can make a customer feel very uncomfortable, so it is important to show that you care by being upbeat.

Sounding Responsible: As a bank teller, along with sounding positive, you should also sound responsible. Sometimes if a person starts to sound too positive, it can sound fake and seem like they are talking down to the customer. You want to have a calm, non-shaky voice and be loud enough for the customer to hear, but not so loud that they get annoyed. This will show that you are confident and you know what you are doing.
