Tash Sultana is a versatile musician who covers a range of genres, including indie, rock, reggae, and psychedelic rock. They use diverse singing styles: soaring, cooing, lulling, vibrato, wailing, unleashed with dramatic dynamics. They use technology to layer their performances to encompass a full band. Sultana started on the streets of Melbourne, busking in Bourke Street Mall with their guitar and loop station. This influenced me to buy a loop station and develop a passion for electric guitar at an early age. I learned that music can be expressed in many ways, despite social status, money, or fame. Social themes are prevalent in Sultana’s music, with lyrics touching on personal issues, mental health and society. While writing songs and writing music, I aim to replicate a similar feel and theme to Sultana. Songs like Dove from their new ep SUGAR take me on an almost spiritual journey, from the twelve string guitar to the mandolin, the track encapsulates the path of life for me.

Neil Young

Neil Young’s music spans over many genres. He has released has plethora of solo albums and has experimented with almost every genre, from folk and rock to electronic and soul. From a young age, Neil Young inspired me to broaden my music taste and play more folk music, incorporating harmonica into my performances. Neil Young emphasises that thinking is the worst for songwriting, "When I write a song, it starts with a feeling. I can hear something in my head or feel it in my heart. It may be I just picked up the guitar and mindlessly started playing". (acousticguitarforum, 2024). Personally, I connect with this greatly. Through listening and creating music, I can create an escape from life, it's personal and vulnerable. When writing songs, I aim to embody this ideology.

Pink Floyd

Tash Sultana's sound expertly traverses soul, funk, RnB, folk, rock, hip hop, blues, and heavily on psychedelic influence, in particular Pink Floyd. Pink Floyd were the architects of two major music movements—psychedelic space-rock and blues-based progressive rock—and became known for their extended compositions, sonic experiments, philosophical lyrics, and elaborate live shows. This band has influenced many artists across the years. (Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. n.d).

Bob Marley

Bob Marley was a Jamaican singer-songwriter whose distillation of early ska, rock steady, and reggae musical forms blossomed in the 1970s into an electrifying rock-influenced hybrid that made him an international superstar (Britannica, 2024). Tash Sultana's influences span many genres, but artists such as Bob Marley encapsulate a similar ambience to Sultana. Their first hit song, 'Jungle," is a reggae-rock heavy tune that put Sultana on the map with 166 million views on Youtube.

Bon Iver

Bon Iver is a Grammy Award winning folk band from Wisconsin, USA, and one of Justin Vernon’s current and most notable music projects to date. (Vogue, 2024)

Tash shares a cover of Bon Iver's 'Flume' on Youtube stating that they find themselves lost in a trance when listening to his music. Similar to Tash's music, the hushed vocals, quivering falsetto, and layered instrumentals serve as experimental puzzle pieces laid together across Bon Iver's albums. (Afterglow, 2022)

"This is one of my favourite songs of all time by one of my favourite artists of all time. Flume-Bon Iver I get found in his music. Should’ve practiced some faces in the mirror first but I guess I was in a trance."

The Rolling Stones

Neil Young's influence on the Rolling Stones may be considered unorthodox. Many artists are accused of plagiarism. The majority of the time, this is accidental, and the influence begins to seep through subconsciously. Neil Young is aware and open about the influence the Rolling Stones had on his music, in particular, the track "Borrowed Tune" (ironic, I know). Neil's honesty regarding plagiarism is refreshing, whilst also proving a powerful statement considering the hardships he endured at the time; loss, grief, depression, etc.

Bob Dylan

Neil Young's vision is influenced by both the folk revival and the British invasion. Bob Dylan's fierce poetry on the civil rights anthem "Blowin' In the Wind" influenced his early lyrics, while the Stones' "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction" introduced him to snarling chords. Dylan initially despised Young when hearing his song "Heart of Gold" on the radio, stating "that sounds like me, it might as well be me" (FarOut, 2022). When asked by author Jimmy McDonough about Dylan's musical influence, Neil Young refers to himself as "a 'B student' of Bob Dylan." They are now great friends.

The Beatles

Neil Young's influence on The Beatles began early in his life. The Beatles were the band that first inspired Young to take the stage and sing, as he recounted in a 1975 Rolling Stone interview with Crowe. “I remember singing Beatles tunes... The first song I ever sang in front of people was ‘It Won’t Be Long’. (Far Out, 2023).

During McCartney’s set at Desert Trip in 2016 (including performances from Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones), Young joined him on stage for two Beatles classics and a John Lennon song. They performed A Day In The Life, which Young has performed countless times, and The Beatles 'Why Don’t We Do It in the Road?' for the first time live together.

Considering his life long influence, Neil Young and The Beatles' connection span across the majority of Young's life and career.
