One of the more prominent genre in the Caribbean is reggae, however, reggae is a deviation of ska and rocksteady. Ska music appeared as African music when American blues and jazz met in Jamaica. As these styles mixed, performers found that the energetic, tropical sounds blended with excited horns and the low notes of the low pitch guitar were not conflicting by any means, but rather really sounded incredible together. As this style of music took off around to the world, ska kept on developing in Jamaica. Ska music started to be delivered at a slower rhythm, with the attention being on the bass, and guitar performances. This music progressed toward becoming rocksteady. Not long after rocksteady developed, the political turmoil of Jamaica in the 1960s that brought forth reggae. The music spoke to a frame through which Jamaicans communicated their satisfaction and additionally disappointment with the political and social needs rehearsed in Jamaica, the Caribbean, and globally. Artists evoked in Jamaicans a consciousness of their socio-auxiliary substances, social customs, and prospects for the future, while the Jamaican individuals thus soaked up the messages and rhythms from the music in their regular daily existences. Therefore music augments its capacity to encourage social attachment and political personality if its significance fits with the philosophy existing apart from everything else. Examples “independent Jamaica” by lord creator.

Trinidad and Tobago celebrate alongside Veteran Calypsonian Calypso Rose who recently won the 2017 Album of the Year award at the Victoire de la Musique in France. The Tobagonian singer album “far from home” earned her the award, this is the first global recognition of calypso music as it competed against intentional musicians and their respective albums unlike other classes such as reggae and dancehall who have an international following brought in by key players like bob Marley and Vybz Kartel. However is this new attention to the art from too late? Over the years calypso tents haven’t drawn in the crowds like their once did, Frank Martineau said “We have seen numbers slipping since 1997,” who is the co-manager of Spektakula, which was once one of the most popular calypso tents. furthermore the list of songs released for the 2016 and 2017 carnival, as shown more and more soca artiste are modifying the style to fit the international standards with songs like Destra’s “closer” and Kes and Nailah Blackman “work out”. It is the hope that more local artists from the calypso and soca genre go on to gain the same recognition as calypso rose.

Soca began in Trinidad and Tobago and its creation are credited to the performer Garfield Blackman, a.k.a. Lord Shorty. Lord Shorty experimented with new sounds to give calypso music a fresh sound. He did this by to adding established Indian melodic components such as the dholak and dhantal to conventional calypso music and refined the class more than ten years. Combining traditional Indian music and calypso as Indians and Africans populations were the two biggest ethnic gatherings in Trinidad. Which he called solka, meaning 'the soul of calypso' commonly spelt as Soca. This music gained recognition within Trinidad and Tobago with Lord Shorty's 1973 hit song, 'Indrani'. But it wasn’t till Lord Kitchener‘s 'Sugar Bum' in 1978 that promoted soca throughout the Caribbean. Unlike Lord Shorty, Kitchener’s version of Soca was racier and more sexually suggestive than his antecedent whereas lord shorty lyrics have a more conservative feel.

Lord Shorty, Indrani lyrics:

She so persistent

Like a real spilt brat

Maybe is love she want

But I feel she to old for that but the emphasis

On the word laylo to me

Seem to consist

Some suggestively

She religious and always clean

It’s obvious she won’t be obscene

Lord it’s puzzling

Hear a next song Indrani does sing

If you hear she

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHxmPi3Z03Y

Lord Kitchener, Sugar Bum lyrics:

Audrey, wey you get dat sugar

Darling thee is nothing sweeter

You make me scream, you make me bawl

You make me feel like 10 foot tall

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0X2ZHqTw3Wo

The Caribbean Civilisation course was very refreshing being a science student. It provided a new perspective on key concepts such as what is civilisation and gender issues and knowledge pertaining to the Caribbean identity. The information provided is critical for any Caribbean citizen’s understanding of their region, and thus, it was particularly useful in shaping the way how students view society and themselves. The opportunities are given to vocalise one thought allowed for stronger discuss with classmates throughout the Caribbean this I would not forget. Henceforth my interpretation of cultural behaviours and “social norm” will have a strengthen background in knowledge gained during this course for that I am grateful.
