The Beginning

In the beginning, France ran the government through a system called the Estates General. This system was divided up into three estates: the First Estate, the Second Estate, and the Third Estate. The First Estate was made up of the clergy/church, was about one percent of the population, owned ten percent of the land and didn't have to pay taxes. The Second Estate consisted of the nobles, made up ten percent of the population, owned ninety percent of the land in France and didn't have to pay taxes. The Third Estate consisted of the commoners who made up eighty-nine percent of France's population and had to pay taxes. This system eventually failed because the Third Estate was fed up with the inconsistency of taxes between the estates and always getting outvotes two to one, which led to the National Assembly. The National Assembly was the Third Estate's first try at a new form of government. The National Assembly was supposed to be representation based on population, but this system doesn't work. The Third Estate is locked out of the building the National Assembly was supposed to be in by King Louis XVI so the Third Estate gathered at a near by tennis court and took the Tennis Court Oath. The Tennis Court Oath was the Third Estate saying they won't disband until there is a constitution put in place for the people of France.

The Middle

The Storming of The Bastille was the initial "spark" of the revolution. The Third Estate feels like the events of the National Assembly are King Louis XVI trying to attack their rights. The commoners tried to rise up against the soldiers at the Bastille, who let them into the Bastille without a fight. The Third Estate succeeded in freeing the political prisoners and gaining weapons from the armory. Afterwards, the people march on the Palace of Versallies because they are angry over the price of bread and think the king and queen are hoarding all the wheat. They are also angry that France is in financial ruin due to the queen's lavish spending and Louis' choice to aid the Americans in their revolution. King Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette are taken and are forced into a legislative government. The legislative government was a constitutional monarchy and it eventually failed because King Louis XVI tried to launch a counter revolution against the on going revolution. This entered France into the Reign of Terror. The Reign of Terror was also known as the First Republic. It was run by Robespierre and supposed to be a government for the people run by the people.

After the Reign of Terror came the Directory. The Directory consisted of an upper and lower house. The lower house makes the laws, and the upper house approves or denies them. The major issue with this system was there were multiple people in charge so no one was ever the true leader of France. This conflict helped lead to the rise of Napoleon. Napoleon was a military genius and staged a Coup d'etat in 1799 to overthrow the Directory. When Napoleon was in control of France he made many political changes some of those being the elimination of the estates system, allowing freedom of religion, increasing education, improving France's relationship with the pope, creating a centralized government for France. Those were all huge changes to France but the biggest and best one of all was the introduction of the Napoleonic Codes. The Napoleonic Codes were a series of laws introduced by Napoleon that simplified the law of France. The codes stated that men have authority over their families, all male citizens were also granted equal rights under the law, colonial slavery was reintroduced, and women where deprived of all their former rights. Napoleon's rule had large impacts on France some being helping France become a strong country in Europe, installing his family as rulers of his conquered territories, and creating a sense of nationalism (favoring one's country's interests) in European countries.
