one of us is lying

Karen M. McManus

I highly reccomend the book one of us is lying. One of Us Is Lying is about five high school students who go to detention, but only four come out. The one who dies is named Simon. He ran a gossip app that shared everyone’s secrets. After he dies, the other four students (Bronwyn, Nate, Addy, and Cooper) become suspects. They all have something to hide, and the story slowly reveals their secrets and what really happened.

The book talks about things like trust, being yourself, peer pressure, and how teens feel when others judge them. It covers these topics in a way that keeps you interested without being too much. The mystery pulls you in right from the start, and I kept trying to guess who the killer was. The suspense builds really well, and I didn’t want to stop reading.

What I liked most were the characters. They all have different lives and problems, but they feel real. As the story goes on they grow and change, and that made me care about them. The book isn’t just about solving a mystery, it’s also about discovering who you really are.

The book is also easy to read. The language is clear and modern, and each chapter is told by a different character, which keeps it fun. It doesn’t have hard words or too many boring details. Even if you don’t usually read mysteries, you’ll enjoy this one.

In short, One of Us Is Lying is a fast, exciting, and emotional book. I recommend it, especially for teens and young adults. It’s deep without being too serious, and it stuck with me even after I finished it. I’d give it a strong 9 out of 10!

A fun fact is that Karen was only eight years old when she wrote her first book, and her bestselling novel, One Of Us Is Lying was inspired by the famous movie The Breakfast Club.

Will Dean

If you like mystery, suspense, and stories with lots of twists, then The Last Passengers is the perfect book for you. I would definitely recommend this book to my friends. I couldn’t stop reading from the first page to the last.

The story is about Caz Ripley, a woman who owns a small café with her sister Gemma. She decides to go on a luxury cruise with her boyfriend Pete, thinking he might propose to her during the trip. Everything seems perfect, just like a dream, until one morning, she wakes up and finds that everyone on the ship is gone. At first, she thinks it might be an emergency, but she soon realizes something much stranger is going on.

Caz eventually finds three other passengers and they are just as confused and scared as she is. Together, they try to understand what has happened to everyone else. The ship starts to lose power, and things become more dangerous. The group must work together, but they don’t know if they can trust each other, or even if they are being watched.

One of the best parts of the book is that every chapter brings something new. There is always a surprise, so you never get bored. The characters are realistic and you feel like you are right there with them on the ship. The story is easy to follow and the writing is clear and exciting. I read the whole book in just 5 days because I couldn’t stop.

The ending was completely unexpected and left me speechless. It made me think a lot, even after I finished the book. I didn’t see it coming at all, which made it even better.

Overall, I would recommend The Last Passenger to anyone who enjoys a good mystery with lots of action and emotion. It's a great book which isn’t too difficult, yet very exciting.

Fourth Wing is a very debated book on whether it is good or bad. It is a fantasy novel about a girl who is forced to attend the Basgiath War Academy where they train young adults to become dragon riders.

Personally, I think that there are a lot of clichés in it, but I still got hooked on the story. As a casual reader, I didn't really pay attention to the writing itself, because you won't find anything poetic or deep, but it gets the job done. I easily got attached to the characters and enjoyed seeing their development.

It is very entertaining and easy to read. The plot keeps moving so you don't lose interest, and I found the dialogues funny. It's a book that doesn't require you to think a lot, you can read through it easily and relax. While I was reading it, I didn't notice how fast time went by. So I would recommend this book if you like a fast-paced fantasy, enemies-to-lovers book that will not bore you.

Anneke Feenstra

I really recommend the book They both die at the end by Adam Silvera. It's the type of book that really stays with you even after you're done reading it.

The book is about a world where you will be notified when you're going to die, exactly 24 hours before it happens. While reading the book you will follow the story of 2 boys named Mateo and Rufus. 2 boys from completely different backgrounds, yet they come together and create a beautiful relationship. Both boys have to face different problems, such as fights with enemies or goodbye's with friends, but that won't stop them from making the best out of their last day, together.

This book is about love, friendship but also loss.

I was competely captivated by this book. The storyline was so well written. You can clearly see the different emotions that each character had, but also each characters different personalities. The author did such a great job at making you feel the emotions through the different ups and downs, whether it's a happy moment or devastating moment.

They both die at the end really made me think about life, as the different subjects talked about in this book are common in real life too.

So if you like to read about stories that really make you feel things, I highly recommend this book.

Yanin Van Den Eeckhaut

During this school break I decided to read "it ends with us" by Colleen Hoover. Even though the book has over 400 pages, I still read it quickly. It only took me 3 days. So if your into books that captivate you from the first pages, this one is highly recommended.

I had heard a lot about this book on social media, good and bad things, but I still wanted to form my own opinion.

Overall, the plot was good and captivating but the storyline was extremely dramatic. There were a lot of emotional twists, which made the story interesting but also complicated.

The story is about an adult, her name is Lily. While growing up she experienced a traumatising childhood; her father was an alcoholic and he was abusive towards her mother. At that time she needed someone to talk to so she made a friend named Atlas. Atlas was older and homeless. When she was a teenager she fell in love with him, but one day he dissapeared.

When she grow up she decided to leave everything behind and to start a fresh life in Boston; she opened her flower shop. In Boston she will meet a man named Ryle, he's the most problematic in the story. They will fall in love and over time he will become violent and abusive.

I highly recommend this book because it has a great plot twist and because it approaches taboo subjects that are often difficult to talk about.

Nora

I would personally recommend The gilded ones written by Namina Forna. It can be an interesting and great choice for people whom like to read about feminism and action. I do think it will have more of an impact to teenage girls rather than boys, to begin with it has a girl as main character and the story is mainly about girls. There is a lot of feminism as i mentioned before, these are the most important reasons why i think girls would be more invested and interested in reading it.

The story line is about a 16 year old girl named Deka lives in Otera, a deeply patriachal society where women's worth is determined by what color their blood runs every girl needs to undergo a purity ritual at puberty. If their blood runs red they are seen as part of the kingdom and normal. Now if their blood is gold they are seen as if they were demons and get highly mistreated. When Deka finds out her blood is running gold, she gets really anxious and treated really bad. Lucky for her she gets in, in a sort of military group with people with the same "condition" as her to fight against the higher powers like gods and real monsters. You can follow her journey and her fights not only againts the upper powers and monsters but also against men and for equality.

I really recommend this and liked it, because you can find a lot of simmilarities in our community and theirs. It was maybe a little bit long but it is a beautiful story. If you like feeling emotions while reading, this book is for you.

Maya

Colleen Hoover

Dear readers,

If you are a person that likes romantic, emotional and drama stories you should like the book It end with us from Colleen Hoover. Maybe you have already saw this book on TikTok because it became popular 1 year ago on Tiktok. The main character of the story is Lily Bloom. Lily Bloom has a verry difficult live because she grew up with a violent dad. Luckily she met a boy called Atlas in this difficult part of her life. Altas moved on to Boston to study. Later Lily also moved on to Boston and she met Ryle a neurosurgeon on the top of building in Boston. They become very close but Ryle was sometimes violent with her. One day they went to a restaurant with Lily’s mother and Atlas was the waiter. The problems start because Ryle was jealous of Atlas and became more aggressive with Lily. Lily had to choose between Ryle and Atlas. I recommend this book to people above 15 years old because it is very emotional and it deals with mature themes.

Lénie Leconte

Are you into romance but also love crimes, then I would really recommend this book. This book is about murder and love. It also will explore some other themes such as friendship and family.

Jill Newman is a girl that lives on Long Island. This year will be her last year at Gold Cost Prep. She really thought it was going to be one of her best years, until her best friend Shaila got murdered, right before her senior year started.

Graham, Shaila’s boyfriend, is accused, but someone is going to tell Jill otherwise. Jill will start investigating and quickly she will see that maybe it wasn’t him who killed her best friend. The only problem is that the further she will dig into it, the stronger Graham’s motive will get. Even though she will start believing that Graham is innocent, no one will actually believe her.

Besides from that, Jill belongs to the most popular group of the school, The Players. Every year the seniors get to choose some freshmen to enter the Players. They will be doing a lot of challenges to prove that they can be part of the group. Everyone fears them because they are so bonded and fearless.

Nikki, a friend of Jill and the other best friend of Shaila will be captain this year. That means she will choose the new ones and will make the challenges up. Even though the murder of Shaila made their relationship stronger, their friendship will be put on the line, when Jill’s brother enters the Players. Her boyfriend Henry is also part of the Players. They really bonded during all the challenges they had to do when they were the chosen ones. Their love life is really strong, they really were their for each other after the death of Shaila, but their someone who she will keep her mind on even though she is in a healthy relationship with Henry.

You will quickly notice that you will start creating a bond with the characters. I would really recommend this book because, even though it’s fiction, it talks about serious issues that are really common to happen in teenage life. It can help teenagers understand some things and even help them.

Camille Deknibber

When Haru was here

The book I chose is called “When Haru was here”, it was written by Dustin Thao a Vietnamese-American author. He is also the author of another popular book that blew up on social media that is called “You’ve reached Sam”. In both books the author focuses on the loss of someone that is very close to the main character. It shows how hard it can be for the people who are left behind after the loss of a loved one. The struggle they go through, but also how their lives go forward. In the book the main character Eric lost his best friend Daniel due to a car accident. But the story focuses more on how Eric has hallucinations and makes scenarios with people who are not really there. It is written as if situations are happening in real time, when in reality none of it is happening. It shows and tells us how grief can be hard and how it can be hard for some people to go on with their own lives. It’s a very touching story, that can resonate to a lot of people who have lost someone in their life. The book is also very realistic, it talks about a subject that can somewhat still be a taboo for some people or cultures. “When Haru was here” is also a book that focuses on the life of a queer/gay person like Eric. The struggles of finding yourself and how you are perceived in our society. As you can see the topics of this book are quite complex and can also make it hard to read. Personally for me, the way the book was written was kind of hard for me to get into the story. The storytelling was very slow, in my opinion there were a lot of unnecessary details. But the hardest thing for me was that a lot of the times I was very confused with what was happening. The hallucinations and reality of the story were very hard to tell apart. Maybe that was what the author wanted or that was the whole point of the book, but for me that made it quite difficult to read. If these points don’t really bother you then I think it’s worth to read.

The story is as I said very touching and realistic. The loss of someone is hard and can break us apart. In the beginning we may find it hard to believe that that someone is just gone, but with time everything gets better. That is also what we can see throughout the story with Eric. Eric can’t really accept it in the beginning, but by the end of the story after a long journey he has made peace with the loss of his best friend. Books like this can give us hope and maybe make us feel less alone.

These are my reasons for moderately recommending this book to other people. If you like to shed tears while reading, then this is definitely for you.

Alma Mastakas

In Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, readers follow an eleven-year-old boy who discovers he’s not just an ordinary child, but a wizard with a remarkable past. After years of being mistreated by his aunt and uncle, Harry is suddenly whisked away to Hogwarts, a magical school full of spells , secrets and strange creatures.

The story revolves around Harry adjusting to this new world, making friends, and uncovering a mysterious secret hidden within the school. Alongside Ron and Hermione, he faces magical challenges, learns about his parents’ mysterious past, and encounters danger that tests his courage and loyalty. The world is vivid and fun, with talking portraits, enchanted ceilings, and secret passageways that give the school its charm. The characters are likable and distinct, with humorous and heartwarming moments. The plot builds steadily, with just enough suspense and twists to keep the reader curious.

One negative point to consider is that some of the characters, especially the villains, can feel one-dimensional, with clear-cut traits like "good" or "evil" and not much nuance. This can make parts of the story feel predictable or less emotionally complex for older readers but it untertains teens better. And obviously, all the Harry Potter book are a bit long. But it will always be worth it to read Harry Potter books. Those books are classics that you have to read at least once in your life.

Overall, it’s an entertaining book with a magical atmosphere and an adventurous spirit. While it may not be life-changing, it's a charming story worth reading especially for those who enjoy fantasy with a touch of mystery.

Enjoy your reading!

The six of crows is a book that

follows six people. The most

important one being Kaz. He is the

leader of the gang called the

Dregs and he has a right hand

woman named Inej. Kaz gets hired

by the wealthiest person in the

city to kidnap some scientist in

another country. As compensation

for his troubles he would receive

30 million pieces of gold. Kaz

realises this is a huge amount of

money and so he gathers some

people he trusts to pull it of. To

complete the crew he first asks

Inej. She is an assassin and knows

how to creep around the city

without being seen. Next he asks

Jesper. Jesper is a sharpshooter

who also has a gambling problem.

Afterwards he ask Nina who is the

healer and is a very charming

person. Lastly there is Matthias

who they first have to rescue

before they can ask him to join the

crew. The final person is the son

of the business man.

A good girl's guide to murder by Holly Jackson is a book I would highly recommend. It's a gripping mystery that keeps you hooked from start to finish.

It follows a high school student, Pippa, who chooses a five-year-old local murder case as her senior project. Everybody believes the case has been solved but Pippa is determined to prove them wrong. As she digs deeper, a bunch of secrets begin to unravel.

As a reader, we don’t know more than the protagonist what makes the story even more exciting. Throughout the book, we follow her private life and her different research what keeps us thinking. Once the story has truly started there are also endless plot twists you couldn’t expect.

In addition, Pippa's intelligence and determination make her a compelling protagonist. Her character fits well with the various themes explored in the story, such as crime, mystery, and thriller. The author also did a great job by creating tension and a dark atmosphere without losing the teenage vibe.

This unique combination of a school project turned into a crime investigation made this novel even better. This book will keep you thinking even after you’ve finished it.

Final version

Iliana Gennart

The Places I've Cried in Public

Holly Bourne

Have you ever looked back on a relationship and wondered how you missed the red flags? In this novel, we follow Amelie, a teenage girl who revisits all the places she cried during her past relationship. As she retraces her steps, the story reveals how love can become toxic without you noticing. Little by little, she understands that love isn't supposed to hurt like this and starts reclaiming her voice to heal the wounds of her past relationship.

The reason I don't highly recommend this book is because it isn't suited for everyone.
The book does indeed deal with difficult themes such as emotional manipulation, abuse, and heartbreak. Despite this, the book does have a lot of strengths.

Firstly, I really enjoy the complexity of the main character. She isn't the perfect protagonist and makes her fair share of mistakes, but that's what makes her so interesting. This also shows the reader that a toxic relationship can make you do things you would have never done before. Amelie's journey is painful at times, but also empowering.

In addition to this, the book also employs a great perspective. It is told from Amelie's point of view. Every time she visits one of the places where she cried, we dive into her memory, revealing her painful past.

Finally, I appreciate how realistic the story is. It isn't sugarcoated and perfectly shows how manipulative some people can be.

In conclusion, I recommend this book moderately due to the difficult topics, but it's still a good read if you want to go on an emotional rollercoaster. And don't forget, as quoted on the back of the book:

"It looked like love.

It felt like love.

But this isn't a love story."

Hélène Persu

DEFINITIEVE VERSIE!

Holly Black

The Cruel Prince is a book of 370 pages and is the first book from a trilogy. You also have 3 other books that happen in the same universe. One of them is the same story but with a different point of view and the two other ones are a duology that happen years later with other main characters.

The Cruel Prince is a fantasy book about a human girl. She has a older sister who is half Faerie half human and a twin who is also a human. Her parents were killed by Madoc. Madoc was the ex-husband of her mother and Vivienne’s father, Jude’s older sister. She ran away years ago with a human man, the father of Jude and her twin. After her parents were killed by Madoc, they were all tree taken to Faerie world. There she lives with fairies but they don’t really like humans so they are often mean and cruel to them especially Prince Cardan (The youngest son of the High King). Jude wants to have a place in this world. She tries to be a knight but she can’t cause Madoc refused so she starts working as a spy for one of the king’s other son, prince Dain. After a big twist, Jude is in the middle of a fight for the throne. Now Jude need to make a choice that can change everything.

I think that it is a really good book because it’s has an interesting magical world. There are also a lot of exciting plot twist. That makes the story lively and you don’t expect what is going to happen. Also Jude is a strong character, she’s brave and smart.

However I only moderately recommend it because there is a lot of difficult words and the sentences are long and complex, what’s makes it difficult for people who has some difficulties in English. You also have a lot of characters so sometimes it’s difficult to follow. Finally sometimes the story can be really dark and violent.

In conclusion my opinion is that if you enjoy fantasy and have a good English level or wants some challenge, you would definitely like this one. But if you’re still learning it might be better for an easier one.

Camille Dechamps

(final version)

One of us is lying is an entertaining murder story. It transports us into the universe of four teens who are living stereotypes (a geek, a jock, a criminal and a princess). They have been framed for the murder of Simon, who’s the creator of Bayview High’s most feared gossip app. The problem is that our four main characters all have secrets they want to hide. Therefore one of them might be lying...

I personally think this is a very entertaining book. Each chapter is written through the perspective of one of the four main characters. Therefore we always switch between different secrets, which makes the story very fast-paced.

Furthermore, 'one of us is lying' addresses different topics like drug dealing, gossip, manipulation... It also talks about how they are all coping with the immense pressures of the police and media. However this is never too overwhelming, making it an easy-read.

Even though the story is entertaining, I still believe it is a bit cliché. Some plot twists are pretty easy to guess and the dialogues are interesting but stereotypical. For this reason, I would moderately recommend it. Nevertheless, I still think that ‘one of us is lying’ is very enjoyable. I was personally never bored reading the story and I would absolutely recommend it if you like exciting fast-paced stories.

Enya Solie

Definitieve versie

“Five Survive” by Holly Jackson is a very thrilling and fast-paced book that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves a story that keeps them on the edge of their seat.

The book follows eighteen-year-old Red Kenny and her five friends -Maddy (her best friend), Oliver (Maddy’s perfect brother), his girlfriend Reyna, Arthur, and Simon (the nice one)- who are on their road trip to the beach for spring break. But when they take the wrong path and end up stranded with no cell service and flat tires, they realize it might not be a coincidence. A loud sound startles them, and Red spots a hole in the side of the RV. When she sees the red bullet moving next to it, she knows. A sniper surrounds them. Total chaos begins. One of them has a secret that the sniper wants, but they had to find it out themselves. While trying to figure this out, some of them do not seem to be so innocent as before. And the fact is only five will survive.

I really love the storytelling in this book. The author uses plenty of dialogue between characters which makes it easier to follow and pulls the reader into the story. The plot takes place in eight hours in real time, making it feel like you’re right there in the RV. The plot twists in this book are mind-blowing, and you won’t want to put it down until you know how it ends. To conclude I highly recommend it if you’re looking for a good mystery with a lot of suspense. If you want to find out how this story ends, you must read this book!

Yaelle De Smedt-Jans

Final version

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue

What if you could live forever, but no one could ever remember you? That’s the haunting curse at the heart of The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue. Set in 18th-century France, the story begins when Addie makes a desperate deal with a mysterious dark force to escape a life she doesn't want. In return, she gains immortality—but is doomed to be forgotten by everyone she meets.

Over the next 300 years, Addie drifts through history—alone, unseen, and determined to make even the smallest mark on the world. She finds clever, often heartbreaking ways to influence art, music, and stories, even though her name is never remembered. Her journey takes her across Europe and eventually to present-day New York City, where something impossible happens: someone remembers her.

That person is Henry, a young man with his own secrets. Their relationship brings a new kind of hope and heartbreak into Addie’s long, invisible life. Alongside him, we see a very different kind of love—one built on memory, vulnerability, and the need to be truly seen. At the same time, Addie’s complicated and emotionally charged connection with Luc, the god-like being who cursed her, continues to evolve in unpredictable ways.

This book is about more than romance or fantasy. It’s about freedom, identity, time, loneliness, and the desperate human desire to be remembered. The writing is poetic and lyrical, full of deep emotional moments and thought-provoking ideas. It’s a book that quietly breaks your heart while making you reflect on what it means to live a meaningful life.

Why I really recommend this book:

- It’s one of the most original stories I’ve read, blending fantasy, romance, and historical fiction beautifully. Addie is an unforgettable character, full of strength, stubbornness, and creativity someone you root for from the very beginning. The romance is emotional and complex, adding real depth to the story without turning it into a cliché. The writing is lyrical and immersive, with moments that feel almost like poetry. The book explores big themes like identity, memory, love, art, and legacy in a way that feels personal and universal. It stayed with me long after I finished reading, and made me think about how I want to live and be remembered.

Themes: Immortality, freedom, identity, memory, love, loneliness, legacy, art

Athena Morelle

The Last Song – Nicholas Sparks

I would strongly recommend The Last Song to other students. In my opinion, this book is emotional, relatable and easy to read. The story follows Ronnie Miller, a rebellious teenager who spends a difficult summer with her father. At first, their relationship is distant and tense, however, as the summer progresses, they slowly begin to reconnect and understand each other better.

What I appreciated the most about this novel is the way the author combines a touching family story with a realistic love story. This balance keeps the plot interesting and keeps the reader engaged throughout. In addition, Ronnie’s character development is very well written. At the beginning she is very closed-off and angry, and over time she becomes more open, mature and understanding.

Another strong aspect is the emotional depth of the story. It explores themes such as forgiveness, love and family bonds in a natural and meaningful way. Overall, I would highly recommend this book because it is touching, well written and leaves a lasting impression on the reader.

Elisabeth Joukhnevitch

Run Away by Harlan Coben is a good thriller that grabs your attention from the start and keeps you reading till the end.

The story is about Simon, a dad who is searching for his daughter after she disappears and gets into a difficult situation. As he looks for her he gets pulled into a world of crime and secrets. Things get really dangerous.

What makes the book great is that the characters feel so real, especially Simon. You can feel his love and determination to find his daughter. Also his fear for her, which makes the story more powerful. The book also talks about family relationships and the problems they face. It's something that you can relate to and maybe even think about your family.

Another thing that makes the book stand out is all the twists in the plot. Just when you think you know what is going on something new happens. This kept me interested and made the book hard to put away.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys rapid and dynamic stories with a mix of emotion and suspense.

Grégoire Lazarevic

The hate u give is a book that I highly recommend. It tells the story of Starr Carter, a 16-year old colored girl who lives in Garden Heights. Garden Heights is not the best neighborhood to live in; there is violence, gangs and much unsafety. Starr goes to a good high school and has her friends and a boyfriend. You would think that she has a easy life, but that couldn’t be further from the truth.

Throughout this whole book you can follow Starr’s emotions and how she feels being trapped between two worlds. This is why you can see her code switching. Which means, changing how you speak or act to fit in with a different group.

As I said before, I highly recommend reading this book because it can be a good lesson for everybody. Even though the book is about racism and not everyone can relate, it can make them understand how other people, who go through these kinds of situations, think and live this down.

Valerie Simon

I would definitely recommend The Summer I Turned Pretty to next year’s students because it is a relatable and emotional story about growing up and change. The book follows Belly, who spends every summer at a beach house with her family’s close friends, including Susannah and her two sons, Conrad and Jeremiah. Susannah is a warm, caring mother who makes the beach house special, while Conrad is quiet and serious and Jeremiah is friendly and easygoing, making their relationships interesting to follow.

One aspect I really enjoyed is the use of flashbacks throughout the story. They are used effectively to show important moments from the past, which helps the reader understand the characters’ history and emotions better. As a result, certain situations in the present become clearer and more meaningful.

In addition, the book is written from the main character’s perspective which allows the reader to fully experience Belly’s thoughts and emotions. This makes the story feel more personal and helps us connect more closely with her experiences and decisions.

Furthermore, this book is particularly great for teenagers because we can easily relate to the emotions and experiences shown such as friendship, first love, jealousy, and the confusion that comes with growing up. The characters often face situations that feel realistic and familiar
which makes the story more engaging.

Overall, The Summer I Turned Pretty is a fun and engaging book that also captures the emotional ups and downs of adolescence in a realistic and relatable way.

Chloé Paton

I really recommend It starts with us by Colleen Hoover, especially for teenagers. In my opinion, this book is emotional, realistic and well written. However, before starting it, you should read It Ends with Us, as it is the first part of the story and helps you fully understand the characters and their experiences.

First, the book is very easy to read. Colleen Hoover uses simple and clear words, so it is perfect if your English is not very strong. Because of this, you can easily understand everything and enjoy the story without struggling

Also, it doesn’t take a lot of time to read. The chapters are short and the story goes fast, so you can finish it quickly.
